My download is too slow to listen to Soucy at that site - but he was an important and influential Quebecois fiddler, to my understanding.

I found it interesting that in his list of Myspace 'friends', there is a message referring to a lively, high-stakes poker game he and one of these 'friends' apparently engaged in just last weekend. So that settles it: there IS poker in heaven!

I would hate to think that anything I said above was taken as any slight on Canadian fiddlers. I had the pleasure of meeting with and playing with Joe Cormier (uncle of JP) during my sojourn in the States and it was an absolute pleasure to hear him play.

It has to be said that one or two of the New England fiddlers I played with were a bit dismissive of the Cape Breton style, commenting that they "played between the cracks", whatever that might mean, I couldn't possibly comment.

Quebecois fiddling might be totally different to Cape Breton style, what would I know ...

I do hope mg has taken no offence at my remarks regarding the videos, it is just that I have posted up dozens of links to what I consider to be outstanding examples of musicality and virtuosity, only to see the videos removed by YouTube due to "terms of use violations".

Youtube was way better before Google took them over ...

meself, it might not be just your dialup. I am on broadband and can't get it to load except in snippets, then it times out to load some more. I don't know why that happens, but it does every once in a while...just takes so long to load I usually give up.

Okay, there's a clip of Bertrand Deraspe here playing with a group of well-dressed French-Canadians. My download is so slow that I can't really say anything much about what he plays on fiddle - he starts off on guitar and switches to fiddle in the middle of the clip, which is the point which I have just reached. It's sort of a "train song"; maybe he goes into Orange Blossom Special. Anyway, there are a few other clips listed; looks like he might play some more straight-ahead stuff in one or two of them.

Okay, if you can join'm, beat'm. On the same bill as the aforementioned Bernard Felix, I saw a remarkable fiddler from the Magdelaine (sp.?) Islands (Isles-de-la-Madeleine), Bertrand Deraspe. He banged out the Jean Carignan stuff like it was child's play. (This was at the Atlantic Fiddlers Jamboree in Abram Village, PEI).

I'll see if I can find any clips of him.

He is one of the greatest. Ashley McIassic speaks highly of him as well and Ashley is no slouch.
I met Ti Jean years ago when he Giles Lossier and Jean Darc Charlobois(sp.) played for patients at a large Psychiatric hospital in Montreal. I'm proud to say that I played a part in making it happen.

Players such as he and Phil Cunningham lift the piano and button accordion out of the slough of mediocrity which is all too often the normal habitat of the instrument.

A long time ago, in a Mudcat far, far away...a young man from England by the name of Sam Pirt, son of Graham Pirt, came to Mudcat Radio and performed for us. The denizens of Mudcat gathered that day around their glowing screens, around the world, some of them even there at Mudcat Central where the great Max and the Elves brought us Live Mudcat Radio with Video. Before the mighty crash, you could see an archive of that great and glorious day and others of Mudcat Radio.

On that day, young Sam Pirt, who also put out a CD with the venerable Mudcatter, Bill Sables, sat and played for us. There was not a bone in his body that didn't get into moving with the music, at times it looked as if his feet would take off on their own and dance the night away. He played for all he was worth and we all were in a glorious abandon with the music around us, while we passed on our hurrahs and cheers in a wonderful chatroom. It was stupendous.

I've just had a look for Sam Pirt. You may hear him at his MySpace site, but that won't give you an idea of the riproarin' time we had with his rapid playing of that day. He does play a beautiful blended tune, though. Learn more about Sam and the others he plays with at Sam Pirt dot com.

I love the Cunninhams. I went out for a beer with them once. Anyway, I can't distinguish between I like them they are pretty darn good and they are top in their class. If I like them I like them. I like sort of jolly types too which at least the first accordian player seemed to be. mg

with the best will in the world, I fail to see why one would wish to draw attention to the playing in these two videos.

sure, they are competent players, but I would expect to see playing of a similar level from the accordionist in any run-of-the-mill ceilidh band.

if we are going to post up videos of accordionists and fiddlers, then please let them be of This standard
