A well deserved accolade and it is good to see a folk musician being honoured in this way. I was just annoyed by the presenter on the news programme trotting out the old stereotypes.

Don't forget she is also a very fine fiddler.

When I "rediscovered" folk music, Kathryn Tickell was one of my first discoveries. I was wowed by her album "On Keilder Side", particularly by her version of Johnny Cope. This is often done as a hornpipe by the Irish, but Kathryn plays it in straight quavers and with great sensitivity. In the sleeve notes, she says she compiled her version from manuscript versions from NE England and Southern Scotland.

20+ years ago, in Vermont. No stage, just her standing on a patch of grass in front of the lake, with a few dozen people sitting around. Nimble, not-quite-traditional piping, and a charming little leer at the audience every time she did something fancy. I was totally smitten. It took months before I managed to get a couple of her tapes, had to send for them across the pond.

I once, many (20?) years ago, heard her on Woman's Hour playing Alexander's Ragtime Band on pipes. But I've been a fan since even before that, since winning her first record in a folk club raffle.

There was an item on the BBC local news on Kathryn's award this evening. Although they were very complimentary about her, the reporters could not resist trotting out the old pewter tankard and beard image of folkies. Pity they had to spoil her achievement by ignorant reporting.

The implication was that old folkies were a bunch of fuddy duddy weirdos while the younger generation are not.

Sir Peter Maxwell Davis was very complimentary about her, though.

Kathryn was recently screened on the Sky Arts channel in a prog entitled 'Kathryn Tickell's Northumbria' - and it's on again soon. I think it's the same prog that was screened on Channel5 some time ago:

Was it Folk Roots that had an article some years ago with predictions for something like the year 2020. According to them she will be made a Dame.

The Queens Medal for Music is a new one to me too, but is evidently some 5 years old, awarded to one person annually. Kathryn appears to be in good company.

Well deserved IMO, and good to see folk getting a bit of recognition from the establishment as well.
