Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: Bill D Date: 08 May 09 - 01:13 PM Interesting to see all that 'said' in one place. Max even gets 90% of the details correct... *grin* But you cant expect a busy administrator to follow ALL the undercurrents. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: cloudstreet Date: 08 May 09 - 12:54 PM Whoops. Let's try that again: http://tinyurl.com/q5lgcg This really is the transcript. J |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: Nancy King Date: 08 May 09 - 12:41 PM Hmmm -- doesn't look as if Max had much to say... Did something get omitted? Thanks for posting the survey results, John. Very interesting stuff. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: cloudstreet Date: 08 May 09 - 11:58 AM And with Max's permission, here's the transcript of our conversation (Appendix C) http://tinyurl.com/or9cae Thanks, Max John |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: Max Date: 08 May 09 - 11:47 AM This is very fascinating stuff John, I think you've done a wonderful job. An excellent paper. Is it ok with you if I post the transcripts from our interview as well? If you have it handy, go ahead and do so. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: katlaughing Date: 08 May 09 - 11:45 AM So, it's not an illusion, there are about twice as many men as women on Mudcat. Interesting. I will read your paper this evening. It looks very interesting. Thanks for posting an update. I really look forward to reading it! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: Desert Dancer Date: 08 May 09 - 11:27 AM Thanks for the update, John. An interesting picture. ~ Becky in Tucson |

Subject: SURVEY RESULTS From: cloudstreet Date: 08 May 09 - 10:41 AM For those with an interest in the results to the comparative survey I conducted in February, I have now posted both the survey results summary and the paper which I submitted based on the survey results. The Survey Summary can be found at http://tinyurl.com/q7a7c2 The assignment paper based on the results is at http://tinyurl.com/rxnj3o Once again thank you to all of the help that members gave me in offering their opinions and impressions. Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: cloudstreet Date: 05 Mar 09 - 06:50 AM Thanks to everyone who responded (372 from mudcat). The survey is now closed. Once I've had a chance to assimilate the information, I'll post some of the results to this discussion thread. John |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: rich-joy Date: 13 Feb 09 - 08:23 AM um .... has anyone else had trouble getting into the survey??? When I click the link in John's 1st post, it just takes me to the "thanks for doing it" end page of the Survey Company - and I can't find my way back to where I do the Mudcat Survey ..... R-J |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: Jack Campin Date: 11 Feb 09 - 07:30 AM I did it, but like others I was a bit perplexed about comparing this to any "real world" group I'm involved in. There are some people I talk face to face about musicological matters with, but most of my real-world involvement is in actual performance in sessions - we may talk about tunes or songs in between playing them, but that's not the main point. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: George Papavgeris Date: 11 Feb 09 - 06:53 AM Couldn't be arsed to do it, but I am keeping the pen anyway. No, seriously, did it last week - doddle. Like others, I'd be keen to see the results. We can then debate them in a separate thread, spiced with the usual abusive judgmental comments towards each other. Or preferably without them. |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: VirginiaTam Date: 06 Feb 09 - 04:44 PM RB John Prine (born October 10, 1946, in Maywood, Illinois) is an American country/folk singer-songwriter. If the story told by Paradise as well as the melody not bluegrass, well it comes near enough for the definition of bluegrass I understood in the 70's when I was listening to Marshall Tucker, Charlie Daniels and John Prine. All playing on the bluegrass hour of the one and only radio station I could get in West Virginia. As to it being a song and not a tune that's true. BTW did you know that your tendancy for pedantry is hanging out? Better put that sucker away. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: Haruo Date: 06 Feb 09 - 02:56 PM Done and Well done Looking forward to the results |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: Zen Date: 06 Feb 09 - 01:45 PM Well four out of five is a result... at least for me. Zen |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: Richard Bridge Date: 06 Feb 09 - 01:42 PM No Zen, I occasionally listen to Scottish tunes. And VT - (1) that's not folk, it's contemporary, and (2) it's a song not a tune. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: Zen Date: 06 Feb 09 - 01:29 PM it's for Irish tunes. That comes in about zero on my interest scale, marginally above bluegrass ones Thanks for that RB... good to know. You wouldn't care to add Scottish, Appalachian and Old Timey so I can rest completely easy? Zen |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: Leadbelly Date: 06 Feb 09 - 12:43 PM Done. Being a marketing researcher I could not say "No" because the questionnaire isn't bad. Good luck! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: VirginiaTam Date: 06 Feb 09 - 12:27 PM marginally above bluegrass ones Thanks RB... added to list of songs for next Stoke Session Paradise by John Prine |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: Don Firth Date: 06 Feb 09 - 12:18 PM Just finish it. And I, too, would be interested in seeing the results. I'm not familiar with thesession, but I intend to check it out. Don Firth |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: Richard Bridge Date: 06 Feb 09 - 10:28 AM I haev finally succumbed to temptation and went to look at thesession. Now I see why I had never heard of it - it's for Irish tunes. That comes in about zero on my interest scale, marginally above bluegrass ones. |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: cloudstreet Date: 05 Feb 09 - 01:34 AM Many thanks to all of those who have completed the survey so far. The count has just passed 400 (running roughly 60% Mudcat visitors). I plan at this stage to leave the survey online and accessible for a month, closing it down on the 3rd of March. I appreciate all of the various perspectives people are bringing to the survey, and will endeavour to incorporate at least the spirit of all the various contributions into my analysis, comparing these two communities. John Thompson |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: TRUBRIT Date: 05 Feb 09 - 12:25 AM double done....... |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: Alice Date: 04 Feb 09 - 07:43 PM Finished the survey. I used to check into thesession.org once in awhile, but it is not as complete or friendly a place as Mudcat, and I've been here over 10 years. When will you have the results? |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: MegW Date: 04 Feb 09 - 07:24 PM Did it! This is interesting for me because I've been approaching Mudcat as more of a pedagogical and archival site for my own research. It's the history geek in me, I suppose! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: Dennis the Elder Date: 04 Feb 09 - 07:18 PM Thanks , I have completed your survey ,I did not know about thesessions, I will visit the site now and dependant on what I find I may find I will answer the survey you have no doubt posted there. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: Phil Edwards Date: 04 Feb 09 - 07:05 PM Completed. I have to say I'm not sure what you're trying to do here, & in particular why there's the dual focus on The Session and the Mudcat Cafe. I found some of the questions very difficult to answer because of this: I've been 'on' the Mudcat for less than a year, but on The Session for 2-3 years; I currently visit The Session about once a month, the Mudcat daily; and so on. If you wanted participants to answer about their *primary* online community, you should have specified this. Conversely, if you wanted users of both to answer on both, you should have duplicated the questions. Interesting, though. I think the key difference between online and real-world is there's much more distance and much more intimacy online - you can spill your guts with confidence, because it feels that much less 'real'. That's just my perception, though - I'll be interested to know what you come up with. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: Big Mick Date: 04 Feb 09 - 06:38 PM All done, bro. Good luck on it. I am anxious to see the results. All the best, Mick |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: VirginiaTam Date: 04 Feb 09 - 02:17 PM I played survey too. re question 12 I have more than one real world community and I would say they don't meet "same" needs as online community. They are complimentary to online community. |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: wysiwyg Date: 04 Feb 09 - 01:44 PM John, I did it. For clarification of countries' scale and geography, if yer in the UK, check with Leadfingers, John MacKenzie, and others who have traveled internationally for Mudcat Gatherings of various sorts. ~S~ |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: Bill D Date: 04 Feb 09 - 12:41 PM I did it, but I'd like to help write the questions for the next one..☺. Some of them are of the order of "why do you like eating & breathing" *grin*.... |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: katlaughing Date: 04 Feb 09 - 10:53 AM Interesting. I look forward to the conclusions, too. Done. One comment: I know we all know, but it might be better, at the beginning, to note it is the Mudcat "Cafe." (I know I am being pedantic!:-) |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: Abdul The Bul Bul Date: 04 Feb 09 - 10:11 AM who could refuse? ........and why they would may make this thread more than a list. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: sharyn Date: 04 Feb 09 - 10:04 AM I did it, A little feedback for you, John. On surveys, it is very helpful to have an "Other" category and space for explanations in every question because surveys don't reflect the subtleties of real life. For instancem use patterns (How often do you visit the site?). Well, sometimes I don't visit for several months at a time and then I will have a lot of questions about something and visit several times a day for awhile. Not being able to check multiple answers or comment renders my answer useless because whatever I choose from the list is inaccurate. Other than that, it was pretty painless |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: Black belt caterpillar wrestler Date: 04 Feb 09 - 07:26 AM Just one thing, I have several "real world musical" communities, three morris teams, a dedicated song club, a choir, three music sessions plus other less frequent associations. It gets a bit difficult to decide how to answer how often I meet them! |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: cloudstreet Date: 04 Feb 09 - 06:06 AM HI Colin and Mr Snail. First of all, Mr Snail. I'm really after a "no" in your case. I'm investigating whether there are "real-world" groups that take the place of the online experience. With respect to both, I'm happy to receive some expansion of your experiences by email, if you're prepared to offer them. If you'd like to remain anonymous, just make that clear in the email and I will even delete your identifying info and just store the body of the email for the purposes of the paper. Email to john@cloudstreet.org Thanks again for taking the time to consider the survey. John |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: Colin Randall Date: 04 Feb 09 - 05:50 AM Also regarding "real world" communities, I would have welcomed a chance to expand on my No. I happen to be living where there are few if any opportunities but in other circumstances, eg back in London or Paris instead of being in the UAE, it would be different. Or maybe it's just my fault for being a temporary expat. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: Zen Date: 04 Feb 09 - 05:47 AM Have completed. Zen |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: TheSnail Date: 04 Feb 09 - 05:45 AM Sorry to be picky John but I'm a bit confused by Q. 12. Yes, I do have a "real-world" community in folk music but it doesn't meet the same needs as the online musical community. Yes or No? |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 04 Feb 09 - 05:09 AM Yes, it's an interesting survey with good questions, and I'll be keen to see the results. I hope everybody will take the few minutes necessary to fill it in - it's easy and non-intrusive. Online cyber-communities are something new in society, and this sort of analysis could be quite useful. |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: gnomad Date: 04 Feb 09 - 04:37 AM Mine is in. Oddly I had not really reflected on some of those questions before, I'll be interested to see the outcome. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: Arnie Date: 04 Feb 09 - 04:32 AM I'm a sucker for these surveys - however, the format is very easy to complete(well I suppose it had to be!)and it only takes 5 mins to complete. When I went to Uni in the '70's I don't recall hearing of degrees in Community Folk Heritage. At that time, this would have involved much time visiting bars and pubs in order to meet folkies and gather material - wonder if a grant was available? |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Survey From: Suegorgeous Date: 04 Feb 09 - 04:31 AM Done - but can I point out a small error? Q.11 reads "If you answered "yes" to question 9.... " I'm pretty sure this should say "question 10". Might confuse some people! |

Subject: Mudcat Survey From: cloudstreet Date: 04 Feb 09 - 02:55 AM I am surveying the members of Mudcat as part of my postgraduate study into Community Folk Heritage. The survey is part of a comparison of Mudcat with another online musical community, The Session (www.thesession.org). If you would like to help me learn more about Mudcat, who catters are and why they like to be involved in this wonderful online phenomenon, follow this link: Online Musical Communities Survey Unless you choose otherwise, your contribution will be anonymous. If you'd like to know more before taking part, please email me at john@cloudstreet.org. With thanks, John Thompson (PS. I cleared this thread with Max prior to posting) |
