AMG – All Music Guide attributes authorship of "Take Your Shoes Off, Moses" to "Jarvis" who I suppose is J. D. Jarvis, because he performs the song on the compilation "Down Home Gospel: 24 Bluegrass Gospel Favorites," 2002. Ralph Stanley also performs the song on 4 albums: "1971-1973" [1995] "Classic Stanley" [1995] "Classic Gospel" [1996] and "Cry From the Cross" [2001].

There are several sound samples at Yahoo! Music Shopping.

Here are the lyrics, says author "NA", but lists Stanleys as artists:

Take Your Shoes Off Moses

What is the tune? Sounds like it should fit "Joshua fought the battle of Jericho." Is it similar?

I learned the song from the Stanley Brothers, and I perform it regularly with my partner in sort of a bluegrass-style arrangement. Besides the verse you know there's these, might be more somewhere:

Go yonder Moses and smite that rock
Smite that rock, smite that rock
Go yonder Moses and smite that rock
For I am the Lord thy God

Stand here Moses watch salvation work
Salvation work, watch Salvation work
Stand here Moses watch salvation work
For I am the Lord thy God

Good luck, Chet W.

There used to be an old eight track tape we used to listen to when my sister and brother and I were growing up, and it had a song with the words:

Well God spoke to Moses in the burnin' bush, burnin' bush, burnin' bush,
Well God spoke to Moses in the burnin' bush saying, "I am the Lord thy God."

"Take your shoes off Moses, you're on holy ground, holy ground, holy ground,
Take your shoes off Moses, you're on holy ground, I am the Lord thy God."

-I can't remember the rest of the words.

The tape also had the songs, "Will You Miss Me When I'm Gone", and "In the Pines".

I thought I remembered the tape being Bill Monroe, but it has been twenty-some-odd years since I last heard it. My dad died Jun 5, 1999, and I guess we're all a bit nostalgic and would love to hear those old songs again. If anyone knows the album title, song writer or artist who performed those songs, I'd greatly appreciate the info. Thanks.
