Subject: RE: Edinburgh sessions From: GUEST,old git Date: 29 Jul 09 - 12:43 PM Back home after a good week. The weather for the most part was bad,but managed to do quite a lot. Managed to get to the Royal Oak (but not on Thursday ,Jim,so didn't meet your brother...it was pouring down that night so we stayed in with a bottle of Laphroaig) Made it to Sandy Bell's and heard some fine music played. It was on Saturday however, Jack, so didn't get to meet you...though I asked after you at the bar!! Sat on the grass in Holyrood Park on Saturday (The only fine day) .....outside of the official area for The Gathering (couldn't be bothered to queue) and listened to The Battlefield Band. It sounded great from there. Was going to go to Wee Folk Club on Sunday but met up with some friends for a meal and afterwards went into The Canny Man's and..............!!! Thanks everybody for your suggestions. Sorry I couldn't take them all up. geoff t |

Subject: RE: Edinburgh sessions From: GUEST,KP Date: 16 Jul 09 - 12:51 PM Zen Monday Tass session is mostly trad/Scots, although its not prescriptive. Andy plays some interesting and complex tunes from Scandinavia, and there is the odd RT song, but its generally quite Scots. Wednesday's at the Tass is mostly tunes (from the SMG repertoire). The Bluegrass session is the Thursday one I believe. KP |

Subject: RE: Edinburgh sessions From: Tattie Bogle Date: 16 Jul 09 - 12:35 PM Penicuik Folk Club are now in the Roadhouse pub, every Tuesday evening. Fridays there's a rotating list of pubs across the south Edinburgh villages, but they tend again to be a bit country/bluegrass/Americana/70s pop. |

Subject: RE: Edinburgh sessions From: Northerner Date: 16 Jul 09 - 11:24 AM Good. I also can recommend Sandy Bell's, the Royal Oak, the Wee Folk Club and Tass. There's occasionally things going on in Leith as well. Haggis and Cullen Skink. Ooh, I wish I was up there... |

Subject: RE: Edinburgh sessions From: Tattie Bogle Date: 16 Jul 09 - 08:54 AM Thursday's the Bluegrass night at the Tass: think the others are more Trad/folk-based. Newtongrange Folk Club have a singaround every Thursday night at the Dean Tavern from about 8.15: a bit out of town but on a bus route: visitors always welcome. Almond Valley Folk Club will be having their monthly session at the Mid-Calder Inn on Tuesday 21st from 8pm: a bit difficult to get to without a car. (in Mid-Calder!) About 12 miles west of Edinburgh. The Antiquary in Stockbridge has a session on Thursday evenings, but I think it's more instrumental than song. |

Subject: RE: Edinburgh sessions From: Zen Date: 16 Jul 09 - 08:15 AM Hi KP, What style of music for the Tass Monday session (I'm always on the lookout for good new sessions)? I've been been to some sessions involving Tass musicians (probably from one of the other nights) but they were a bit too bluegrassy for me (I prefer old-timey and mixed Scottish/Irish/other traditional). Cheers, Zen |

Subject: RE: Edinburgh sessions From: GUEST,KP Date: 16 Jul 09 - 04:58 AM Very nice mixed session on Monday nights at the Tass Bar - corner of Royal Mile and Jeffrey St. Its hosted by the fiddle/guitar duo of Andy Lyons and Ian Main, who are a) great players and b) very friendly. There will be tunes, unaccompanied singers, and singer guitarists. Being a Monday its not too crowded or noisy, people actually listen to the music, and you get a good atmosphere. The Tass has other sessions on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and (i think) Saturday -getting generally louder as you go through the week... cheers KP |

Subject: RE: Edinburgh sessions From: Northerner Date: 14 Jul 09 - 11:25 AM Wny not visit the Scottish Storytelling Centre in the Royal Mile while you are there? They host quite a number of events. Their cafe is quite a decent place for a light lunch. I wish I was up there too. Homesick (parents were from Edinburgh). |

Subject: RE: Edinburgh sessions From: Jack Campin Date: 13 Jul 09 - 09:33 AM Penicuik Folk Club - yes it does meet, but the venue has changed. I've only been once, about four years ago. It was fine, but Penicuik is a bastard to get back from by public transport. Same goes for Haddington. |

Subject: RE: Edinburgh sessions From: Jack Blandiver Date: 13 Jul 09 - 08:46 AM Does the singers club in Penicuik still meet? We went there a few years back and had a rare time. |

Subject: RE: Edinburgh sessions From: Jack Campin Date: 13 Jul 09 - 08:45 AM I've started a Twitter page for this: Jack's Edinburgh area Scottish session twitter mobile version I'm only listing sessions that I have reliable information about and which I could imagine myself going to, i.e. mostly Scottish, and no all-Irish or singer-songwriter events. I'll add others as I hear about them. I might add sessions in Glasgow as well if nobody else steps in. |

Subject: Edinburgh sessions From: old git Date: 13 Jul 09 - 08:06 AM I shall be in Edinburgh from 20 July until 27 July. What sessions should I not miss? I am an unaccompanied singer. I already know about Sandy Bell's ,The Royal Oak ,Wee Folk Club(and will try to get to at least one session of these)..and I know the Edinburgh Folk Club in Pleasance is closed for the summer. Anything else happening? geoff turner |
