I had a good time on Saturday, heckling the Barden sling-a-round.
Many fine voices & musos.
Also some who should have been fined - esp Tone Deaf Leopard.
Leysdown Sally is still going round in my head.....buggers!
Sunday turned out to be better than I had feared.
It wasnt just myself and Lawson (which would have been hard on the throat as well as the ears).
Chris Roche was superb, Marion and Malcolm likewise, plus others who sang and played to the enjoyment of many inside The Bohemian.
Looking forward to next time.
Tenterden I guess?

I too had a great time. I was lucky enough to be there from the Friday to Sunday night and on all three days enjoyed the wide variety of entertainment and venues on offer.

Of course there were traditional shanties and songs all sung beautifully, but I would also like to mention The Chimney Boys who played on Sunday lunch time. They play their folk music in a contempory style with ability, talent, and enthusiasm. All of this combined with youth, none of them over twenty…(yes I know)

Very well done to the organisers, you thoroughly deserve a big pat on the back for a job well done

I had a fantastic time. Friday evening in the Town Hall with Marian Button and The Deal Hoodeners was special for me, and then The Bohemiam on Saturday (how does Martin arrange that sort of weather?). A truly splendid Fish & Chip meal and on to The Ship with 'No Worries' which finished with 'Kimber's Men' raising the roof. No wonder I was worn out - but a very happy worn out.
Well done to all the organisers, you do a very special job.

Yup, thoroughly enjoyable, and the sun shone... til the mist came down... sorry didn't get to the Bohemian, cos I was in the town hall, but enjoyed the lifeboat session and the many sessions including the Monster Busk on Sunday. Mike & Bill are always so welcoming...
and Adrian o's earthpoem was the i-deal way to wind down, lovely singing from Sue Watson, too.

We had a smashing afternoon in The Bohemian. The sandwiches were out of this world, if a little expensive. They were a meal in themselves. We hadn't expected to do so many songs and were in the end all sung out by the end of JB's session, so we ate, wandered and left for home by six. Didn't like the look of that sea fog! Kimbers Men were a joy!

The opening evening sing in the bar at Cottington Lakes was OK but the absence of proper beer meant I had to drink Wifebeater, which in combination with my own stiff gins back at the vardo was not so clever. It's a shame that the showers and loos at Cottington Lakes have become quite unpleasant, since other wise it is a nice and cheap campsite and only a fiver in a taxi to town.

John Barden's singaround at the Bohemian was great - the sun shone, the beer and food although pricey were excellent, and there were some real lift-off moments. The fuscia goes from strength to strength. The only slight dampener was the amplified banjo (and one hurdy-gurdy, and for a while a female singer) from the pier. Do they need to be so loud that they are heard across the main road and behind the pub opposite?

The Ship was cheaper for the same excellent beer, and it was a nice session (one or two people were below par, but that goes with the turf for a session), and just as we were all getting tired (having been singing since 11 am) at 10 PM in came Kimber's men and the roof lifted about three feet. The bulk of them were still at it when we turned into pumpkins at 11.30pm and it looked as if it could be a long and beery party.

No Worries are hosting the singaround at The Ship, Saturday night 6.30-10.30. This venue has been most welcoming and well attended in past years and we are looking forward to meeting up with friends new and old.
We also have a spot at the pier 2.00- 2.30.
We are great fans of the Deal Maritime Festival and hope that there is a terrific turnout this year.

Well, I entered a song for the "folk song competition" that's apparently running this year (on Sunday) but heard nothing back from them at all. I feel a bit disappointed - Fair enough that my song was presumably judged not good enough to enter but would have been nice to get at least an e-mail back telling me that someone had received it (& hopefully) given it a listen. As it is I'm just left wondering if anyone even heard it at all. Still ... par for the course I s'pose!

(I always think hearing nothing at all is probably worse than a "Yeh ... got it, hated it!" type response! :-)

I can vouch for that.
I once got into conversation with Mr Lawson at the Hop Festival - the first time that I'd ever met him - the next thing I remember, 90 minutes had passed, I'm told that I had bought three rounds of bitter and I awoke as an expert on the traditions of Nelsons navy and its impact on folksinging in the Whitstable area.

I'm thinking of writing a book on it, to earn some money, so that I can speak to him again to say thank you...................

synbyn, it is not a pretty sight to see some poor innocent traveller, who, quite innoculously,
asks of Mr Lawson some trivial seeming folk oriented question, being treated to an hour or more
of folk history/mythology/boring factology backed up by a desire to filch a pint.
I have seen toughened American tourists reduced to offering him a double whisky just to shut him up..........
....come to think of it, I might try that myself (not the buying HIM a whisky bit- the importuning of innocents bit)

Sunday I shall be appearing with Shipwrights Shanty Crew (hope I am not 50% of it) and may add my musical expertise to Red Eye,
and then heckle Happy Trails and others as I see fit.
My main job will be to keep the unwary visitors safe from the machinations of Mark Lawson.

A varied lineup this year and lots to do- there's also the Kent launch of Singing Histories on Friday morning to look forward to... and as well as all the customary attractions like Mr Barden in the Garden, I hear Mr O is presenting his multimedia show on Sunday eve- and Sue, Bernard and I will be Field Farm and Philandering at 1pm in the town hall on Saturday, we're going to draw lots for the choices...
