Subject: RE: Ballad of Joe Hilderbrand From: kathy carter-white Date: 28 Aug 99 - 11:58 PM I found the 1960 Life Magazine Article. There were two songs: The Ballad of Joe Hilderbrand was copyrighted 1960 by Unirrock-Tree Publishing Companies, and it's got A and E7 chords, and these lyrics: I hear the troopers comin' across the hilly land, I know they're out asearchin' for Joe Hilderbrand. The other is Run, Joe, Run Am Dm E Am E am Dm E7 Am "Run, Joe run-- Run, Joe, run-- Run down the hill-- Run thru the dale-- Run 'cause the law is on your trail." The Article is "The Birth of Ozark Ballads." Any ideas about how I can get this music? (Do I tell them this song was about some of my kinfolks or just keep that to myself????) |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Ballad of Joe Hillterbrand From: Rick Fielding Date: 23 Aug 99 - 12:18 AM Kathcart, it's new to me but maybe if we run it back a couple of times one of our "ballad hunters" could help. Rick |

Subject: Ballad of Joe Hillterbrand From: kathcart Date: 22 Aug 99 - 03:01 AM According to Life Magazine, about early '60's, there was an Ozark ballad which was born around Pope County, AR about Joe Hillterbrand (or Hildebrand), who ran off with his wife's niece and lived in a cave for a year. The feds busted up a lot of folks' stills while looking for him. Joe and his young sweety lived by eating wild foods and robbing travellers, and gave themselves up only after Mrs. Hilderbrand agreed not to shoot them with her doublebarrelled shotgun. When they surrendered, their clothes were rags, held on by strips of cloth tied in bows. Does anyone know this song? The chorus contains "Run Joe Run." |
