Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Lonely Banna Strand- wrong month? From: GUEST Date: 11 Jan 11 - 09:12 AM His mum was an Otway... nice bit of Irony, the first vessle, likely to have spotted the Aud, was the HMS Otway, Oh, the burden of being Anglo Irish, as me da used to say, we're to English for the Irish and to Irish for the English... The greatest irony... when they raised a statue to Sir Roger on Banna Strand, what was in the background in all the photos? The Marritta Anne. No one mentioned why Sir Rodger should get a statue. How soon they forget. I was an apprentice boat builder to Monty O'Leary... his grand da was the reason the Aud did not land the guns. Six fellows were lost, driving off Conor Pass to their deaths, from An Dangean, bringing new signals to O'Leary... He stood watching the Aud give the new and wrong signals all night, and did not bring her into, was it Smerwick harbour? Must ask Monty... well, many misfortues around the event. If he was not hung, the ill treatment in the tower would have killed him. He was dying of phnuemonia at the time they hanged him. Bring him home to Ireland to rest in peace... Lorcan |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Lonely Banna Strand- wrong month? From: GUEST,Alan Whittle Date: 11 Jan 11 - 07:31 AM yes its still a very sad song. When I was young I used to think that 18th century guy who wrote a happy ending to King lear was nuts. Nowadays, I'm not so sure. If Rc had stayed aboard the submarine , gone back to germany and had tea with the Kaiser. That would have been nicer. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Lonely Banna Strand- wrong month? From: GUEST,Pat 'de Verse Date: 10 Jan 11 - 10:37 AM Banna Strand or Banna Beach is in Co. Kerry, south-west Ireland. When I sing the first verse it's usually; T'was on Good Friday morning, afore the break o' day a German ship was signalling beyond out in the bay.............. it seems to make more sense at any rate. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Lonely Banna Strand- wrong month? From: Bron-yr-Aur Date: 09 Jan 11 - 02:48 PM I have often wondered about this, as the lyrics are clearly wrong, as Good Friday cannot occur in May. My only answer is simply that the lyrics were composed to rhyme with "out in the bay" |
Subject: Lyr Add: Lonely Banna Strand- wrong month? From: GUEST,Pat 'de Verse Date: 09 Jan 11 - 02:13 PM Whoever wrote this song certainly got their dates wrong. Good Friday 1916 was April 21st. "T'was on Good Friday morning, all in the month of May"?? Anyway, if the Aud had been off the Kerry coast in the month of May, they would certainly have got their dates wrong,as the Rising was over by then. Pearse had surrendered on April 29th 1916. |
