hi ezr
just a little correction--- Toshi is a guy--- must have been the dim lights and the distance-----

hi Wyo
just to expand a little on the importance of that night
toshi has been studying english here for about a year--and hasn't been home in the interim---a few months ago he discovered bluegrass music(some of my cd's)and has been listening to it alot----------well his 20th birthday (in japan the 20th is the most important for a guy)was monday 9/27 and he wasn't able to go home foor financial and school reasons----- so a couple of friends of his and myself talked it over and we thought that it would be nice to take him to a live bluegrass concert for his birthday (we kept it a surprise he didn't know until he got there) well it got a little convoluted --- i checked in the local paper (Village Voice-if your familiar with NY) and couldn't find any bluegrass -- when i'm not looking i see bluegrass all the time--- well i was going to post a thread --but then i saw Easy Riders thread (thank you thank you thank you EZR)--and went ---- well we asked Jim Rymes (the leader of the group --if they would play happy birthday for toshi --a surprise for him --well at the encore they did it one better -- they called him up to the stage and played it for him --and let him remain onstage for the encore number ---- well when it was over all the musicians again wished him a happy birthday and shook his hand -- when he returned to us in the audiance --his smile was wrapped around to the back of his head he was so happy!! -- if you knew him (toshi) you'd see that he is one of the most unassuming and unaffected you will ever meet -- who takes joy in every kindness that is shown him--- --------- well that's the story ! thanks for asking !------------- thosp

I know all that, theoretically. It's just that I associate a much different vibe with Brooklyn.

You'd probably be amazed to know that we don't ONLY sing cowboy songs out in this neck of the woods, too.

They called her up to the stage and sang "Happy Birthday" to her.

Bluegrass in Brooklyn: Open your mind, WW. Brooklyn, the 4th largest city in the USA, is a diverse, cosmopolitan, mixture of cultures and interests. Woody Guthrie and Ramblin Jack Elliott, Dave Van Ronk, Walt Whitman, Et. al. were born and raised in Brooklyn. I'm lucky to live here. I have access to so much culture.

What happened with Toshi? (I have to admit I'm feeling a little cultural dissonance trying to imagine bluegrass and old-timey music in Brooklyn. I think it's great, mind you, but my mind is boggling again...) ww

Friday night's concert features Jim Reams and the Barnstormers. They're always a lot of fun.

Jim is authentic. He's from Kentucky. EZR

Hello EZR and Mrs EZR,
I can only be there in spirit since I'm 10K miles away and plagued with a thing called work. But you know I'd be there in a heart beat if I could. I'm certain you'll have that Martin box there picking away. If yopu are the only Mudcatter in NY area, then they need a good waking up. How about Max, Can we run a full page ad in the NY Times or maybe a fence sign at Yankee Stadium? Ah...did'nt think so.

This is a music festival, held at my church, in Brooklyn NY. It was a lot of fun last year and very educational. TOM PALEY performed on Saturday night, last year!

It's cheap too. Friday night costs $7.00 Saturday costs $1.00. I'll be there both days, wearing a name tag that says "Easy Rider". I hope to see a few Mudcatters.

2nd Annual Park Slope Old-Time/Bluegrass Jamboree at The Good Coffeehouse, Brooklyn, NY
