Subject: RE: Well, Well, Well (O'Keefe & Dylan) From: Joe Offer Date: 12 Aug 00 - 08:58 PM Well, Well, Well. We got responses for both songs, but in the wrong threads. This thread requests the Bob Dylan/Danny O'Keefe version, which a kind Mudcatter named Yo found here (click) -Joe Offer- Well, Well, Well (Bob Dylan/Danny O'Keefe) The man who stole the water Will swim forever more But he'll never reach the land On that golden shore That faint white light Will haunt his heart 'Til he's only a memory Lost in the dark Dig your hole in the ground All the way down to hell 'Til there ain't no more water In the well, well, well When you're down on your knees With nothin' left to sell Try diggin' a little deeper The water used to run So clear and so fresh Now poison creeps through it That withers the flesh The man sells us back our water Like we're fish on his line Tryin' to turn our blood Into his wine Dig your hole in the ground All the way down to hell 'Til there ain't no more water In the well, well, well When you're down on your knees With nothin' left to sell Try diggin' a little deeper In the well, well, well Take care of your body Like you care for your soul Take care you don't dig your self Into a hole 'Til you've paid the price You don't know the worth Of the air and the water The fire and the Earth Dig your hole in the ground All the way down to hell 'Til there ain't no more water In the well, well, well When you're down on your knees With nothin' left to sell Try diggin' a little deeper In the well, well, well The man who stole the water Will swim forever more But he'll never reach the land On that golden shore © 1996 Bicameral Songs (BMI)/ Wild Rider Music (BMI)

Subject: RE: Well, Well, Well From: Joe Offer Date: 29 Sep 99 - 04:37 PM Tiger and Allan were looking for this thread, and thought it had trouble. It seems to be working OK. Maybe they just hit it while I was in the middle of trying to fix it. Sorry if there was a problem. Say, has anybody found the lyrics to this song? Note that it's not the Well Well Well that Peter Paul and Mary sang, and it's not the dyin' song that's in another recent thread (click) -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Well, Well, Well From: Joe Offer Date: 28 Sep 99 - 08:18 PM I cheated, rich, and followed Roger's suggestion and combined the three threads that discussed this one song. Copying one message at a time is neater, but it was easier to copy one 7-message thread in a single block. Guess I got caught, huh? Very perceptive, rich. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Well, Well, Well From: raredance Date: 28 Sep 99 - 08:07 PM Why does this thread have 12 (now 13) posts to it and only 5 (there might be 6 if this one counts) posts listed at the top. Is there a mudcat malfunction? rich r |
Subject: RE: Well, Well, Well From: rich r Date: 28 Sep 99 - 05:22 AM I found the following at a web site of unreleased Dylan songs. There were no lyrics, so it may be up to someone with one of the albums listed to write down the words. The Steve Howe web site claimed to have a portion or all of the song to listen to, but I could not get it to work on my old computer. rich r WELL WELL WELL Bob Dylan/Danny O'Keefe, 1996 N? Gil Walker - "While the song is credited to Dylan and Danny O'Keefe, it has only been released on Maria Muldaur's "Fanning The Flames" album (1996). The guy I heard about the song from is also a film/music critic for a local group of weekly newspapers; he told me he asked Maria about the song at a recent club appearance, and she told him, that, as far as she knew, no one else had released a version of the song. Where did she get it? She said she just called up Dylan one day and asked him if he had anything on hand she could put on her new record - so he sent it to her! Unfortunately, she didn't say (or John didn't ask) whether she got sheet music, a Dylan demo, or something else to work from." AF- Since Gil sent me this information, cover versions of WELL WELL WELL have also been released by David Lindley and Wally Ingram on their September 1998 album "Twango Bango Deluxe" (Topic Records) and by Steve Howe with P.P. Arnold as guest vocalist on his June 1999 album "Portraits Of Bob Dylan" (Eagle Records UK/Cleopatra Records US). It's now reported that on the demo tape the song is performed by co-writer Danny O'Keefe, not Bob, so there is no circulating Dylan version

Subject: RE: Well, Well, Well From: Roger in Baltimore Date: 28 Sep 99 - 05:20 AM Anika, You should just keep posting to the first thread. Perhaps our handyman, Joe Offer will merge these threads together. Your additional lyrics help to clarify which song you seek. I searched the Bob Dylan Lyric Site to no avail. The song is not in the book Bob Dylan Lyrics 1962-1985, either. I think I am tapped out at this point for ideas. Where are those Bob Dylan junkies of yesteryear. Did we scare them all off discussing "What is folk"? Roger in Baltimore |
Subject: RE: Well, Well, Well From: Anika Date: 28 Sep 99 - 05:17 AM The lyrics that I am looking for ( Well, Well, Well)sung by Maria Muldaur and Mavis Staples and written by Bob Dylan, begins like this: A man who stole the water Will swim forever more, But he'll never reach that land on that golden shore. That faint white light, Will haunt his heart, He is only a memory, Lost in the dark. Chorus; Dig a hole, dig a hole, Come away down the hill, Til there ain't no more water, In the well, well, well. |
