Subject: RE: Max: Suggestions for the show. From: Allan C. Date: 01 Oct 99 - 02:44 PM Gee, I like all of the ideas above, especially Alison's. But meanwhile, it might be fun to do topical shows. Like a Food Song show during which you could play "Greasy Beans" by Burpee and the Fartwallows and "Let Us All Sing Together" (lettuce, - get it? - Sorry.) by Tasty Grove. Other topics could include,Songs About Mammals (whether or not they are marsupials), Songs About Things That Float, (Stop it, Spaw! I can hear the wheels turning.) Singing Of Airborne Items, and Songs Featuring Instruments That Nobody Knows How To Pronounce Or Spell. Oh, Bert and Max, I solemnly promise that as soon as I get ahold of a new microphone, I will make a tape of some songs and send it to you. |

Subject: RE: Max: Suggestions for the show. From: alison Date: 30 Sep 99 - 10:19 PM any point in opening it up to others? like doing the occasional "desert island discs"... "Tonight Catspaw's selection of songs" (God help us!!)...... or if people have the capacity they could record an entire show and send it to you on whatever you require.. then all you have to do is play the tape or whatever...that would give you a night off occasionally...... we can all still do the "thread of the week" type stuff....... just wouldn't be able to do the phone in's. slainte alison |

Subject: RE: Max: Suggestions for the show. From: Bert Date: 30 Sep 99 - 01:18 PM Thanks Kat, you're right we need more stuff from Mudcatters. That 'is' a mini disc 'recorder' that Max has. He got it at the Sony outlet in Lancaster PA. As soon as I saw it I had to go and buy one for myself. It is about the size of a walkman and the quality of the digital recording is great. The refurbished ones cost $150 or thereabouts. Bert. |

Subject: RE: Max: Suggestions for the show. From: katlaughing Date: 30 Sep 99 - 01:04 PM Humph....grumble, grumble....once in awhile might be nice, but I like the show the way it is, free and easy (although I know there is a lot of work involved in making it appear that way) and, I also think there are plenty of Mudcatters who fit the bill for interviewees, although it would be nice to learn more about others. Love Roy Bookbinder's stuff; had the pleasure of seeing him perform many years ago in RI, when he only had one tape available. I think Mudcatters need to get off their arses, me included, and send Max and Bert the materials they've been asking for, i.e. songs for the contest and tapes, cd's, etc. as well as other CONTENT for the show.**BG** BTW, Max, was that a mini-disc player that you were talking about? It does not record, right? Also, by mini, do you mean one of those portable, "personal" disc players ala walk(hu)mans?*AnotherBG* dogmaticKat |

Subject: RE: Max: Suggestions for the show. From: DougR Date: 30 Sep 99 - 12:50 PM Max, I think another interesting person to inverview sometime would be Billy Edd Wheeler. I'm sure he would be willing. He is a very accommodating guy and interesting to talk to. DougR |

Subject: RE: Max: Suggestions for the show. From: Jack (Who is called Jack) Date: 30 Sep 99 - 12:46 PM Max, even in jest you have a point. Adopting my suggestion as a weekly format would be too pedantic and cut into the fun free-flowing nature of the show. My thought was to do something like it once every couple of months at the most. As a part time effort it would probably take that long to put one show like that together. Is there a way you could get 'catters involved. You know there are a lot of skills and motivation in the community. Maybe all you'd have to do is outline a project and ask if anyone out there wants to do the legwork. Just at thought. |

Subject: RE: Max: Suggestions for the show. From: Bert Date: 30 Sep 99 - 12:40 PM Thanks for the suggestions guys, keep 'em coming. Jack, I'm sure we'll get more organized as we go on but it will have to happen naturally and will only go so far. I don't think we'll ever get to the stage where we're reading scripts from a teleprompter. I love your idea of intervewing people and thanks for the suggestions. MMario, of course the BS threads are informative and educational. Where else can you learn about dental dams, tiples and zoomorphic ocarinas. Bert. |

Subject: RE: Max: Suggestions for the show. From: MMario Date: 30 Sep 99 - 12:29 PM My first response reading this was.....geez, that would take time to do.....and the impromptu format isn't bad... even with elves how much can anyone expect Max to do?
'course I'm someone who finds even most of the BS threads to be informative and educational, so .... MMario |

Subject: RE: Max: Suggestions for the show. From: Max Date: 30 Sep 99 - 12:03 PM Sounds organized, that scares me. No, really, it sounds good. Bert and I are learning and growing, and will certainly get more structured as we go. In fact, we are planning and preparing more for our live show next week. I will be talking about it more soon. The only problem we have is a shortage of time. Bert and I both have real jobs and pretend to have lives, so there really is not a lot of time to prepare. Onstage and Mudcat demand a lot of me, and adding the radio show may have been a sadistic thing to do. |

Subject: Max: Suggestions for the show. From: Jack (Who is called Jack) Date: 30 Sep 99 - 11:54 AM Love the show. Its got a great feel. Like the earliest days of radio/TV. Couple of ideas to throw at you. Pick a great artist/style to feature. Play their music. Interview someone who specializes in it. For example, you could do a Reverend Gary Davis show, with a phone call/interview with a modern player who specializes in his music or who knew him (reminiscent of your talk with Sandy Paton). Maybe a call to a Roy Bookbinder, who was a student-friend of Davis'. (BTW Roy is also a friend of both Pink Anderson and Robert Lockwood Jr. the still-living-and-playing octegenarian step-son of Robert Johnson). Or you could do a mountain ballad show and have a phone call with Ginny Hawker (for example). She's a singer and school teacher from Elkins W. Va. Beutiful voice, knows the music from its source, teaches at Augusta folk-music camp in the summer. The mudcat community has people who know who's out there preserving and recording in tradtional music that might be able to get you in touch with these people. Wally and Sandy come to mind off the top of my head. There are also some musicology professors who play and research this music in the field. They might be willing be part of a pre-arranged interview. Programming like this would be more along the lines of the original pre-forum/pre DT Mudcat, i.e. educational, and thematic. What do you think? |
