WAR BETWEEN THE STATES
Songwriter?

My name is Buford Julep, I am a Southern Man.
I had a Southern family and I had some Southern land.
I wore it out with cotton in the good old Southern way,
I had Southern accent which I still retain today.

But then along came the war between the states, pa, pa, pa, pah...
And we lost everything.

When Lincoln was elected, the drippings hit the fan,
The cry for Southern independence trickled through the land.
I enlisted in the army, with Mr. Ed my horse.
My wife ran the plantation, with our happy slaves of course.

But then along came the war between the states, pa, pa, pa, pah...
And we lost everything.

Well we beat them at Manassas, and we beat them at Bull Run,
and we beat them boys at Chancellorsville, we were having lots of fun.

We beat them at Parcheesi and at Space Invaders too.
We lost old Stonewall Jackson, but you're bound to lose a few.

But then along came the war between the states, pa, pa, pa, pah...
And we lost everything.

We invaded Pennsylvania, the turnpike it was long.
We all marched into Stuckey's, one hundred thousand strong.
The pecan logs (alt: corn dogs?) were delicious, they were a tasty treat.
How could we know that later we would taste a great defeat.

But then along came the war between the states, pa, pa, pa, pah...
And we lost everything.

Well the Yankees had our number.
They called us on the phone.
And they said, hey youse guys has lost the war, why don'tchas go on back home?
At Appomattox, General Lee surrendered up his sword.
The fact that things looked pretty bad, could no longer be ignored.

But then along came the war between the states, pa, pa, pa, pah…

There were a great immigrant lads from many countries who found themselves slapped into a uniform as soon as they got off the boat. Because of the blockade, most of those immigrant boats landed at Union ports. I'm not too familiar with the experiences of Welshmen, in particular, but there were a number of units fighting under the "flag of green" on both sides, and many times they included numbers of men with names indicating they came for countries other than Ireland. Manpower needs were such that there was probably not much concern given to national origins.

I have two versions of the Johnson Boys, one which is fairly close to the original, I think, but at the moment I can't remember for sure what album it is on ~~ The Hillbillies, maybe. The other one is a somewhat "updated" version with some reference to WWI, done by the Tenneva Ramblers in 1927 or a bit later. I have no time to do any research right now, but I will keep it in mind. Since you mention it, it seems quite possible that they were historical characters.

Could you post a little more from the lyrics?

There are thousands of wonderful Civil War sites.
There were thousands of "Johnson Boys" in the Confederate army.

The veteran's department has an incredible data base.

However, to answer your query more information is needed something more along this line:
Unit identification
State of enlistment
Battles/campaigns served in
Generals served under
Dates of service

I am looking for some history on some song characters and wonder if this is the time to create a new threat as named above. My search concerns the Johnson Boys, as the song tells, ... "scouts in the rebels' army..." I have a version of the song as done by the Nashville Bluegrass Band, and would like to see if anyone has any historical info on the "Boys" themselves. Many thanks. Rod
