According to the notes to "The Early Years, 1958-1962" by the NLCR, the source is: Blind James Howard with fiddle, Harlan, KY, 1933. Library of Congress 74 A.

I remember this song from an NLCR recording in the 60's.

Digitrad has the lyrics, but says only:

"From Mike Seeger's singing @religious filename[ OLDFISH DP oct97"

and does not cite Mike's source. I have the LP but not the notes. Can someone help me with information about the origins of Mike's version?
