Subject: RE: BS: For the green jello fans From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 26 May 12 - 01:09 PM Your link didn't load Becky, but I'm amazed if all this jelly business is true! I'd quite like an exploding Buckingham Palace for our Wedding Anniversary, and I'm sure after I'm gone, some funeral jellies would cheer up my grieving friends no end! |

Subject: RE: BS: For the green jello fans From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 26 May 12 - 04:51 AM Now I'm getting excited, imagining meeting a guy at a party who says, "I'm a Wedding Cake Explosives Detonator!" I'd definitely want to know more! (What exposes it all as a spoof is the mention of the MoD and the word 'powerful' for the explosives. Very funny though!) |

Subject: RE: BS: For the green jello fans From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 25 May 12 - 06:05 AM Desert Dancer, what a scream having 'funeral jellies' and models of Buck Palace and St Paul's. The funniest thing was their promise to send a 'Jelly Technician' along to set up the displays. Now imagine you meet an interesting chap at a party, ask him what he does for a living and he replies, "I'm a Jelly Technician'. You'd edge away tactfully wouldn't you? |

Subject: RE: BS: For the green jello fans From: Geoff the Duck Date: 24 May 12 - 12:02 PM B in T - I fully understand the difference between animal and vegetable gelling agents - In an earlier posting I pointed out for Bobert's benefit that the boat in question was not surrounded by an animal product. The line from the news report read as follows :- Artist Harry Parr, from jellymongers Bompas and Parr, said the mixture used sodium alginate derived from seaweed, industrial dye and a lime flavouring. I notice that the link you put a couple of posts above this was to the firm responsible for the boat floating green jelly. Quack! GtD. Oh the Lime Jelly Sailor, He lives without fear. Subject: RE: BS: For the green jello fans From: Desert Dancer Date: 23 May 12 - 03:44 PM Geoff - if the package says "gelatin" or "gelatine", it's processed collagen, an animal product (refined "hide glue", basically!). Agar-agar (from seaweed) is a vegetarian alternative, but not as commonly used, and certainly not in "Jell-O". Gelatin, or more specifically, Gelatin dessert "Alternatives to gelatin include non-animal gel sources such as agar-agar (a seaweed), carrageenan, pectin, konjak, and guar gum." Agar-agar You may have a larger presence of non-gelatin jelly in the UK nowadays since the BSE (bovine spongiform encephalitis) crisis, however, according to this article from the BBC (from 2000), "Since March 1996, all British-derived gelatin has been banned. All ingredients for gelatin have been imported from abroad by law." Green is the scourge of the Jell-O line, as far as I'm concerned. Blue, is just wrong. The ship looks pretty in shiny green, though. You Brits can get pretty serious about your jellies, though... (Put your cursor on the images there and more will scroll by. Dan, put on your seatbelt.) Click on "Explosion Service", too... ~ Becky in Tucson |

Subject: RE: BS: For the green jello fans From: JohnInKansas Date: 21 May 12 - 09:04 PM "Blue Raspberry" as the name of something isn't really too far fetched. Most raspberries turn from green to red to purplish as they ripen, but my grandpa had a couple of bushes of a variety that almost completely skipped the red and went pretty much straight to a true blue, and the "squeezins" actually were "just plain blue." Since the flavor wasn't noticeably different than the red/purple ones, a "blue raspberry flavor" doesn't tell much though. The "blue" variety grandpa grew might have had a more distinctive flavor when grown in a better - or at least different - climate. Kansas has pretty fair soil, I guess; but the climate isn't necessarily all that wonderful for a lot of plant life that grows more easily "around the corner and down the road a way." John |

Subject: RE: BS: For the green jello fans From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 21 May 12 - 01:22 PM "Blue raspberry" is probably a flavor made up by chemists. Let's just say it's 'Blue Raspberry' and call it quits. Sure, there's no such thing as a blue raspberry, but if there was, this is what it would taste like. Trust me." |

Subject: RE: BS: For the green jello fans From: JohnInKansas Date: 19 May 12 - 08:40 AM "we're setting the ship afloat on a sea of lime green jelly," he said." Doesn't he mean "slime green jelly?" What color will it be after a couple of days in Bristol? (I haven't been there, and it's probably different than Philadelphia.) Very rough estimates of the area (based on approx height of specatators for scale) suggests an initial jelly layer of about 1 inch. In a very few days the jelly will be a sheet of sticky rubber, probably less than a half inch thick, almost completely insoluble in water and - in my experience - very difficult to scrape out of the pot. I rather doubt it will be particularly easy to sweep the inevitable trash off it if it's left more than a few days, but of course all the volunteers who mixed it are commited to help with the cleanup after the event - or aren't they? No matter. It's ART! John |

Subject: RE: BS: For the green jello fans From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 19 May 12 - 08:13 AM Green jello or no green jello, I'm enthralled by the ingenuity of the glass "sea" surrounding the ship. For those as curious as myself, the ship is dry-docked, not afloat, but the hull was still corroding due to high humidity. The glass surface seals off the area below the waterline so that the relative humidity can be maintained at 22%. Presumably, the area above the waterline is still in good enough shape to not need the extra conservation measures. |
Subject: RE: BS: For the green jello fans From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 19 May 12 - 05:57 AM Not sure if this will be just a visual experience, or will it wobble and give the visitors a feeling of being on the sea?
