Uh, isn't the march referring to the song sung by the soldiers as they plodded along? General Burgoyne's attempt to sweep down from the north was a disaster. General Howe's idea was to have Burgoyne come down from Canada while he, Howe, would capture Philadelphia so as to cause a surrender. Never worked. It was winter, and Burgoyne really got hung up by the weather and the wilderness.

I seem to recall a song which I think was called "A World Upsidedown" or something to that effect. I remember something about the British troops singing it when surrendering their weapons to Washington at Yorktown. I'm wondering if that isn't the same march. Do you know?

Margo

I looked for the tune, and the only thing I found was a General Burgoyne's Quick Step (6/8) that doesn't sound anything like Cotton Eye Joe. Where did you hear the tune?

Where is General Burgoyne's March? He didn't do any marching after Saratoga. He resigned from the army, as that had proved not to be his calling, and became a full time playwright. Songs he wrote, but tunes- I haven't seen any.

IS "Cotton Eye Joe" the same tune as "General Burgoyne's March?"

If so, what are the orignal words?
