there was a very short period in Mudcat when there were 'song(s) for the day'(SFTD) instead of just using 'Lyr. add.'.

OK, so this is probably a dumb question, but what does SFTD mean? I'm afraid that my 28 years in the Guvmint made me rather acronymophobic.

Margo, a GIf is a picture (graphics) file. The "Braes" file is a picture of the actual sheet music.

I e-mailed it (2 pages) to Lydia. It's quite a large chunk at 400KB. Let me know if you'd like them, and I'd be happy to send them to you.

A tune that may or may not have anything to do with Tannahill's song has been printed as far back as 1742, with variant versions and variant titles by Tannahill's time (c 1792-1810): Braes of Balquhidder/Balquider/Balquither/Balquithe/Balwedar/Balwhither.

Caroline sings a version (with a glorious tune) that was collected in Tennessee. The text is close to this one, Jeri, but not so long. We'll have to swap versions next time we get together, and compare them both to the one sung by Carrie Grover in Maine, and Jeannie Robertson's version, recorded in Aberdeen, Scotland! Thanks much for this one!

I found Tannahill's version in this thread. Other than the additional verses about the "lads o' the South" and "though simple are the joys," and where the choruses fall (after each four lines instead of eight) this is the same.

The tune I have is unlike either tune in the database, or that of Wild Mountain Thyme. I don't know if it's the same as the tune commonly associated with the Tannahill version of not.

This version doesn't seem to be in the database. I transcribed the song from public domain sheet music I downloaded from who knows where. The title pages states:
"BALQUITHER" A Poplular Scotch Air sung by Mrs French. Philadelphia, Published by G.E. Blake, No 13 south 5th street.

I managed to put the tune into Noteworthy Composer so I have a MIDI, but I can't get MIDIText to convert it so I can send the tune in. I also have the GIF files of the sheet music on my computer if anyone's interested. ----------------------------
