Joe,
there was a very short period in Mudcat when there were 'song(s) for the day'(SFTD) instead of just using 'Lyr. add.'.

OK, so this is probably a dumb question, but what does SFTD mean? I'm afraid that my 28 years in the Guvmint made me rather acronymophobic.

and, once more..*grin*....depending on which thread you opened first, you MAY be tired of seeing this ....but if you missed it........

"

I promised I'd get this to Jeri awhile back, so here is my opportunity....This is a digital photo from Songs of Scotland ...edited by George Farquhar Graham..circa 1850...(Child lists this book as one of his sources)

I am experimenting to see if digital photography is good enough to share stuff like this...WARNING..this is a BIG file..329,000 bytes...I will see if I can get readable files with less size. But I think it is good enough to see the tune and verses..plus some notes. "

Margo, a GIf is a picture (graphics) file. The "Braes" file is a picture of the actual sheet music.

I e-mailed it (2 pages) to Lydia. It's quite a large chunk at 400KB. Let me know if you'd like them, and I'd be happy to send them to you.

Jeri, I am interested in this one. Pardon my ignorance, but I've seen GIF files mentioned, but I don't know what they are. I have noteworthy composer, so if I can download a MIDI, I can put it into notation. Lemmeno, Margo

A tune that may or may not have anything to do with Tannahill's song has been printed as far back as 1742, with variant versions and variant titles by Tannahill's time (c 1792-1810): Braes of Balquhidder/Balquider/Balquither/Balquithe/Balwedar/Balwhither.

Caroline sings a version (with a glorious tune) that was collected in Tennessee. The text is close to this one, Jeri, but not so long. We'll have to swap versions next time we get together, and compare them both to the one sung by Carrie Grover in Maine, and Jeannie Robertson's version, recorded in Aberdeen, Scotland! Thanks much for this one!

I found Tannahill's version in this thread. Other than the additional verses about the "lads o' the South" and "though simple are the joys," and where the choruses fall (after each four lines instead of eight) this is the same.

The tune I have is unlike either tune in the database, or that of Wild Mountain Thyme. I don't know if it's the same as the tune commonly associated with the Tannahill version of not.

Another copy in the Levy Collection, Box 193, item 153. Didn't we have Tannahill's version in an earlier thread?

Subject: Lyr Add: THE BRAES O' BALQUITHER
From: Jeri
Date: 19 Nov 99 - 12:55 PM

This version doesn't seem to be in the database. I transcribed the song from public domain sheet music I downloaded from who knows where. The title pages states:
"BALQUITHER" A Poplular Scotch Air sung by Mrs French. Philadelphia, Published by G.E. Blake, No 13 south 5th street.

I managed to put the tune into Noteworthy Composer so I have a MIDI, but I can't get MIDIText to convert it so I can send the tune in. I also have the GIF files of the sheet music on my computer if anyone's interested. ----------------------------

THE BRAES O' BALQUITHER

Let us go, Lassie go,
To the Braes o' Balquither
Where the blae-berries grow
'Mang the bonnie Highland heather.

Where the deer and the rae,
Lightly bounding go together,
Sport the lang summer day
On the Braes o' Balquither

Let us go, Lassie go,
To the Braes o' Balquither
Where the blae-berries grow
'Mang the bonnie Highland heather.

Let us go, Lassie go,
To the braes o' Balquither,
Where the blae-berries grow
'Mang the bonnie Highland heather.

I will twine the bow'r,
By the clear siller fountain,
And I'll cover it o'er
Wi' the flow'rs o' the mountain:
Let us go &e.

I will range through the wilds,
And the deep glens sae dreary,
And return wi' their spoils
To the bow'r o' my deary.
Let us go &e.

While the lads o' the South
Toil for bare war'ly treasure,
To the lads o' the North
Ev'ry day brings its pleasure:
Let us go &e.

Though simple are the joys
The brave Highlander posseses,
Yet he feels no annoys,
For he feels no distresses.
Let us go &e.

When the rude wintry win'
Idly raves round our dwelling,
And the roar of the linn
On the night breeze is swelling,
Let us go &e.

Then so merrily we'll sing
As the storm rattles o'er us,
'Till the dear sheeling ring
Wi' the light lilting chorus.
Let us go &e.

Now the summer is in prime,
Wi' the flow'rs richly blooming,
And the wild mountain thyme
A' the moorlands perfuming;
Let us go &e.

To our dear native scenes,
Let us journey together,
Where glad innocence reigns
'Mang the braes o' Balquither.
Let us go &e.
