Well, San Diego is pretty warm during the days in winter, today was in the 70's after 10 AM; but the nights get chilly. Well, might not seem chilly to Vermontuhs, but we residents cuss about it and threaten to move to Southern California.

You would be well served to be able to drive -- it's a rambling sort of town crisscrossed with canyons and freeways, but there are good bus services throughout town. There are a couple of "Rent-A-Wrecks" in town, where used cars cvan be rented for little -- relatively, that is.

Jim Croce's widow runs a nice place called Croce's (appropriately enough) where music is played and there's scores of little music gigs goiing on here and there on any given evening -- blues, rock, funk, and classical to be had as well as some first rate theater. You can camp along the beach at Carlsbad, north of the city, and at Campland by the Bay and probably a dozen otther sites. Y'know I never have really looked into camping around here -- we usually go out of town. But a good web search will probably tell you more than I can. I'd check out Campland by the Bay -- it is centrally located and as inexpensive as it gets, I guess, but I d on't know just what sort of campland it is -- it takes trailers but I think it also has tent sites.

If you're moved to try a hotel, the less expensive ones are East of the city, for example in El Cajon, or South in Imperial Beach, Chula Vista or National City, all communities that are in the county of San Diego but not the city itself.

In general expect a cost-of-living jump compared to Vermont, just as you would in New York City (perhaps not that bad exactly, I dunno).

That's about all I can think of off the top of my alleged head. Life is a moment which becomes more Senior every day! You may want to stay, though. San Diego does that to people who have had enough Winter for one lifetime. Write me (amos@san.rr.com) if I can be of further assistance.

I'm considering taking my honey to San Diego on New Year's Day, for a week or so, anyone here from that immediate area? any thoughts for low budget places to stay? What's happening in terms of music? (classical as well as folk in our household, also jazz) Are we dumb to try this without being able to drive? Any good parks where we could camp? Thanks.

Susan A-R in Vermont where it is cold and dark.
