Subject: RE: 2016 Obit - famous father Leo O Braonain From: keberoxu Date: 11 Aug 16 - 06:43 PM This is a tough year for "Baba", maiden name Maire Duggan, Leo Brennan's widow. First her husband passes; now (August) her brother Padraig. Both the Duggans and the Brennans must be grieving. |
Subject: RE: 2016 Obit - famous father Leo O Braonain From: GUEST,keberoxu Date: 25 Jun 16 - 02:42 PM Sorry, I still can't link, but here is the URL. http://tuairisc.ie/leo-o-braonain-fear-uasal-ceolmhar-ar-shli-na-firinne/ FWIW, I located this article with a search on www.google.ie site. Somewhere else I read that of the adult children, it was the youngest son Bartley who manned the Tavern. |
Subject: RE: 2016 Obit - famous father Leo O Braonáin From: Felipa Date: 24 Jun 16 - 09:18 PM I was there about a year ago, Michael. Another one of Leo's sons was there working - so at least one member of the family didnt become a professional musician and he was happy to tell us all about Clannad and Eithne/Enya. There seemed to be more photos of Máire(Moya)than the others. At the time he said Leo still kept an interest in the music and the goings on at the Tavern. |
Subject: RE: Obit - famous father Leo O Braonáin From: michaelr Date: 24 Jun 16 - 07:40 PM I spent a short while at Leo's Tavern some years ago. There are lots of Clannad's gold records on display. It's a nice place to visit in Donegal. |
Subject: RE: Obit - famous father Leo O Braonáin From: Felipa Date: 24 Jun 16 - 06:11 PM a link for that article in Irish, please, Keberoxu is it the An Tuairisc column in the Irish Times or is it an Irish language website not associated with that newspaper. That is funny about the translation of "Ceithre scór go leith". So many ways to count - "ceithre scór agus a deich" or "déich mbliana agus ceithre scór". You can also use fiche or fichead (twenty) instead of "scór". Did you know that daichead (40, dhá scór) comes from dá fhichead. Keberoxu, have you seen the old Mudcat thread re "Seachrán Charn tSiail" yet? (relevance is that it is a song which Clannad recorded) omg, I was searching for some Irish language info and I learned of another death, a singer I knew. Eamonn O Faogáin sang traditional songs in Irish and sang in Irish language choirs as well. He wasn't anywhere near ceithre scór go leith yet. http://www.meoneile.ie/ailt/eamonn-m%C3%B3r-%C3%B3-faog%C3%A1in-gael-uasal-ar-l%C3%A1r#.V22t0zWM65w |
Subject: RE: Obit - famous father Leo O Braonáin From: GUEST,keberoxu Date: 24 Jun 16 - 12:44 PM When an online search for news pulled up the website for Tuairisc, with a nice obituary in Gaelic, of course I needed translation help. In the Gaelic of origin, it is printed that Leo Brennan's age was fourscore plus one-half score, which is fair enough. But I worked that out when I took the first sentence apart word by word. The online translator, not saying which one, maintained that Mr. Brennan's age was four and a half feet. |
Subject: RE: Obit - famous father Leo O Braonáin From: Waddon Pete Date: 23 Jun 16 - 06:43 AM I was sorry to read this news. My condolences to all who know and love him. I have added his name to the "In Memoriam" thread. RIP Peter |
Subject: RE: Obit - famous father Leo O Braonáin From: GUEST,Erich Date: 23 Jun 16 - 01:55 AM Sad news indeed. He was a great guy. I saw him with his big piano accordion on several trips to Donegal and very well remember him singing "Sitting on the bridge below the town". I had some great evenings in his pub. RIP Leo, join the session up there. |
Subject: RE: Obit - famous father Leo O Braonáin From: keberoxu Date: 22 Jun 16 - 01:58 PM I am just now reading the autobiography of his oldest daughter Moya/Máire. Of course my heart goes out to his widow. That said, his descendants, once they get past the suffering that always goes with bereavement, will have solace in that their forebear had a long, happy, fruitful life. That in itself is a blessing. |

Subject: Obit - famous father Leo O Braonáin From: GUEST,Philippa Date: 22 Jun 16 - 10:21 AM Leo Brennan, Leo O Braonáin, has died at the age of 90. I first heard the band Clannad at the family business, Leo's Tavern, where Leo himself used to entertain with song and accordian playing. http://www.irishtimes.com/news/ireland/irish-news/leo-brennan-father-of-enya-and-clannad-musicians-dies-1.2694871 |
