BTW, Sheila, I re-read my message from the CBC, and apparently it's BBC in Scotland. Does that help? I haven't heard back yet, from them on whether it is Medium Wave (I think we call it AM here in North America), or FM.

"We smuggle it in from Canada.
Nothin quite like it in the States!"

heh-heh-heh

Bill
although I once got into a huge brawl with my Murrican spouse when we crossed the river back into Canada and I sighed, "Ah back in the land of decent radio." But I stand by that.

Hi guys. Thanks for the interest. I suspect the Kitchen PArty won't show up until near when it goes to air, so, around Mid February.

I'll check on that Radio Scotland thing for you.

Yes, thank goodness we have CBC in Canada. We'd be hard pressed to find good radio in most of the rest of the country (ie outside of Toronto, Montreal, et al). As a for-instance, in Halifax, we have essentially THREE radio broadcasters, on about a dozen stations. There are CBC, Maritime Broadcasting, and the Newcap Group. That's it. We have a number of stations but almost all of them have little local input and a lot of the on-air stuff for music is all computer controlled.

Wonder when they'll just have a computer do the voice too!

I can hardly wait, I recall seeing a special on Stan Rogers a few years ago and they did Barrett's Privateers sitting around a Cape Breton Kitchen. It was magical. I come from a very musical family and have had some of the greatest times of my life sitting around my Uncle Vinnie's table with him playing the 5 string, My Uncle Don playing the tenor and mandolin, my Uncle Frank playing fiddle and tenor, my Sister Susan playing the guitar along with a number of my cousins. A typical evening will have bluegrass, Irish, Blues, Folk, Beatles era rock, doo wop, country etc. I have extremely diverse tastes in music and I believe that they stem from years of listening to music in this setting. Unfortunately they live about eight hours away, so I don't get to do this foten enough, although I'm on my way tomorrow for a few days.

Would you happen to know if that would be on Radio Scotland medium wave, or FM?

Obviously, Jeri and I had the same idea, but I had this open quite a while as I was listening!

Right on. A couple of years ago the CBC broadcast a terrific PEI (Prince Edward Island) kitchen party with fiddler Eddy Arsenault and his extended family--just the greatest music thing I've ever heard on radio a whole hour, and I realized "I've been in that kitchen!" It was at the house of Helene Bergeron (Eddy Arsenault's daughter) and Grady Poe, who we met years ago when they were doing -- big surprise -- "kitchen parties" for tourists at resorts around the Island. We were somewhat threadbare off-season tourists at the time. Got to chatting, and Grady and I discovered we not only had a common friend, but had both been introduced to traditional music by him (Nathan Curry). So they lent us their cottage on Northumberland Strait for the weekend. (I thanked Nathan next time I saw him.) Swell folks, and they're doing real well now with Barachois.
PEI fiddling is great--largely Scottish but with somewhat more Acadian in the mix than Cape Breton, and less technical.

So, if you can have a kitchen party at a resort, I guess you can have one on a pier...

Bill

George, I looked all over the site and never did find the reference to the Kitchen Party. I did find lots of neat stuff though, and am currently listening to Handel from Halifax ~~ very nice. For those who might care, here is the page with the links to all of the CBC audio feeds.

(earlier I was watching an interview with Jewel Kilcher and also checked out the Holiday Guide)

Oh! The times listed are ATLANTIC standard time. That 4:05PM is the same as 8:05/20:05 in England or 12:05PM on the Pacific. Remember, in Atlantic Canada, we're -4 horus on Greenwich time.

For those of you who have been lamenting the lack of Cape Breton type music availability on the Web, well, good news!

Last year, the plans for the Kitchen Party was cancelled by the untimely strike of some of their employees. However, the CBC luckily had some skilled negotiators and those plans were merely shelved instead of being totally cancelled. Here is some information they sent me today:

Ashley will be the featured act on the first show of the Nova Scotia Kitchen Party.
The 11 week series will be broadcast live from Pier 21 in downtown Halifax on Saturday afternoons, Feb. 19 - April 29 between 4:05 - 5:00. The show will be heard live in Canada on CBC Radio One, live in Scotland on BBC, as well as on shortwave radio Radio Canada International, in many parts of the world and of course, as part of CBC Radio's streaming, around the world on real audio on the internet........CBC.CA and look for Kitchen Party.

Come and enjoy. This will start roughly the third or fourth weekend of February! Thank GOODNESS! I have to work at least during the morning, counting inventory. It'll be SO great to relax afterwards at the Kitchen Party.
