Subject: RE: tune on padraig o keeffes statue From: GUEST,Peter Laban Date: 01 Nov 18 - 02:51 AM Interesting how his year of birth gives rise to confusion. The mass card from 1963 has him 74 years old at the time of his death, which would give a date of birth in or around 1889. The plaque at Glountane gives 1886 while the statue in Scartaglen gives 1906 while the 1901 census has him aged 13. |
Subject: RE: tune on padraig o keeffes statue From: Jim Carroll Date: 01 Nov 18 - 02:43 AM Story of on of Padraig O'Keefe's tune Flute player Billy Clifford was tring to get one of his tunes and asked him constantly to teach it to he One night in Jimmy Obrien's bar he promised to give it to him if he came upo top the bog, where he was cutting turf, the following day. Clifford turned up as arranged to find that O'Keefe had traced out the tune with his finger in the side of the bank from which he had just cut his load of turf - the tune became known as 'The Bank of Turf' Jim Carroll |
Subject: RE: tune on padraig o keeffes statue From: GUEST,Peter Laban Date: 01 Nov 18 - 02:29 AM I looked at your links since I posted above Freddy. It is most likely sandman saw the plaque at the house on Glountane Cross and confused it in his mind for a 'statue'. I don't remember or find any evidence of any tune on the only statue of POK in Scartaglen and there doesn't seem to be any music on the monument in Castleisland. O'Keeffe's notation system used the spaces between the staff lines to represent the strings of the fiddle with the numbers indicating the fingers. It's not very hard to translate into notes. At least one book containing fascimiles of a collection of his notations has been published. |

Subject: RE: tune on padraig o keeffes statue From: GUEST,Peter Laban Date: 30 Oct 18 - 08:27 AM Mike Kenny's statue in Scartaglen? I just looked up photos I took in October 2009 and don't see a tune on any of them just the inscription: Pádraig Ó Caoimh Sár Mháistír Cheoil Glountane Cordal 1906-1963 Last of the fiddle masters of Sliabh Luachra It may be on the back though, I don't have an exact memory of it. I know there's another monument (not a statue as far as I know) in Castleisland but haven't seen that. |
