Sorry to hear that, Johnny J: he was indeed a "character"! Archie Fisher even wrote a song about him as they lived in the same part of the Scottish Borders, and I believe he was an integral part of the early days of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, as administrator from 1970 -76.

I've just read in the local press that John passed away on 16th September.

He was a weel kent character in Edinburgh and The Lothians in various circles including theatre, poetry, story telling activities, also as a song writer and frequenter of folkie pubs, clubs, and festivals.

One of his best known ditties was "No-one ever reads the Evening News" which we discussed here a few months ago.
