I learned it a bit differently.

The first stanza is the same but the remaining stanzas are as follows

“ No silly Jack O Lantern shall I make” he said.
“I’m determined to remain a useful fellow”

“ For the glory of the Jack is in the lantern
On the gatepost where they set him up so high
And the glory of the turkey is the drumstick…
But the glory of the pumpkin is the pie!”

I sing this to my grandkids every fall.

Does the melody sound similar to the song sang here? http://blackballing-timtebow2.blogspot.com/2012/11/thanksgiving-turkey-drumstick-jack-o.html

I've found two articles which date the song to before 1935; see:
- Spokane Chronicle, June 28th, 1935, p. 4
- Brooklyn Times Union, November 17th, 1936, p. 23

Both, unfortunately, don't specify an author, with the latter even saying "Author unknown"

As Thanksgiving approaches, I'm reminded of a song from my youth. I don't remember the title; I've always thought of it as just the pumpkin pie song. I've looked to see if the lyrics to this song are already on this site, but I couldn't find them. Here they are, as best I can recall. I remember the tune, but I can't make out the chords.

THE PUMPKIN PIE SONG

Oh, a lone pumpkin grew on a big pumpkin vine.
He was round. He was fat. He was yellow.
"No funny jack-o-lantern shall I make," he said.
"I'm determined that I'll be a useful fellow."

So he raised up his head when the cook came around
And at once he was chosen the winner.
His fondest wish came true: he was proud pumpkin pie,
And the glory of the great thanksgiving dinner.

For the glory of the Jack is the lantern
As he sits up on the gatepost, oh so high.
And the glory of the turkey is the drumstick,
But the glory of the pumpkin is the pie.
