"Mistletoe, holly, logs, Christmas trees, bells, stockings, snowmen...many people in Britain use a whole range of seasonal decorations for both Christmas and Yule. But why do we use them and where did they come from? What do these decorations mean? This talk will explore the origins and uses for a range of traditional decorations, including typical midwinter flora like holly and ivy!

"This talk will be hosted via Zoom webinar. This reminiscence session is hosted by the Unlocking Our Sound Heritage East of England Hub at Norfolk Record Office, one of ten UK wide heritage organisations working with the British Library to preserve rare and at-risk audio archives.

In this talk, we’ll be dissecting the well-known Christmas carol, ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’, and looking at the latest research to determine which elements of the song could have existed in the Ice Age.

Could there have been partridges in a pear tree? What about gold rings and drumming drummers?

At the end of the talk, we’ll reveal Creswell Crags’ very own, Ice Age-appropriate, lyrics to ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’.

For your own well-being, and the protection of your ears, our Curator will NOT be singing. But feel free to grab a mince pie and have a sing from the comfort of your home.

I will be giving a talk about English Christmas carols at Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution (BRLSI) at 7.30pm on Friday 10 December.

I will be uncovering archaeological layers in the history of carols and coming to some perhaps surprising conclusions. I’ll also be talking about the recent renewed interest in unusual old carols and where people are singing them in pubs.

This is a hybrid event, so as well as a live audience there will also be people attending via Zoom, so if you like you can sign up to attend via Zoom in the comfort of your own home. I do hope you’ll be able to make it.
