Subject: RE: Dave's Shanty Songbook From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 13 Jun 25 - 07:23 AM I sent the link to shanty singing friends & one replied that the 2025 address doesn't work, so I tried http://www.dave-wheatley.org/ (thanks Black Auk!) & got his home page - Welcome. These are just some of the things I have dabbled in, during my lifetime. This site is new and still under construction. So, don't expect everything to work yet - then clicked on http://www.dave-wheatley.org/songbook/index.html |

Subject: RE: Dave's Shanty Songbook From: FreddyHeadey Date: 13 Jun 25 - 07:18 AM Oh! It failed for me once yesterday then it worked,,, Today, the same. I'm using a chrome browser on an android tablet. Working if I just paste in www.shanty-songbook.co.uk https://shanty.epizy.com/ dated 2022-2024 seems to work for me today & http://www.dave-wheatley.org/songbook/0-pages/about/about.html works but I notice they have an exclamation mark in a black triangle in the left of the url box "denotes that your Site is using http and not https" idk are some browsers more careful than others about what they'll open?? Beyond my knowledge! |

Subject: RE: Dave's Shanty Songbook From: GUEST,Black Auk Date: 13 Jun 25 - 06:32 AM ^ that URL doesn't appear to work either. It contains just an iframe which points to http://www.dave-wheatley.org/songbook/index.html and that doesn't exist ¯\_(?)_/¯ |

Subject: RE: Dave's Shanty Songbook From: GUEST,Keith Price Date: 21 Jan 22 - 06:56 PM Cheers Dave. You have an excellent site good luck with it. I was telling an old Stormy mate, Arthur Garnet about it. He said the cassette came out in 1992 and was transferred to CD in 1995. There's a few more about and a number of CDs we did with Stan Hugill. I see you have a video of Hughie Jones as well. I'll tell Hughie he'll be pleased to know. Keith. |

Subject: RE: Dave's Shanty Songbook From: GUEST,Dave Date: 21 Jan 22 - 05:47 PM I say Kieth Price, I've just remembered. I came across Stormalong John singing in Bristol Harbour, onboard the "Pascal Flores". Loved it, and I bought the cassette, and I still have it. Must have been about 1988. Cheers mate Dave |

Subject: RE: Dave's Shanty Songbook From: GUEST,Dave Date: 21 Jan 22 - 05:36 PM Hello Kieh Price Kieth Price You have no idea how influential to me that CD was, or was it a cassette, of Stormalong John. It was something to aspire to when I formed the Wareham Whalers in 2004. It is to you I owe the thanks. Dave |

Subject: RE: Dave's Shanty Songbook From: GUEST,Dave Date: 21 Jan 22 - 05:14 PM Hello Lighter You know it's a Puffer Fish. I'll let you into a little secret: Because I'm adding songs all the time I put these random pictures in so I can use the space for a new song, without having to move too many around and keep them alphabetical (as best I can). Does that make sense? Dave |

Subject: RE: Dave's Shanty Songbook From: Lighter Date: 21 Jan 22 - 03:30 PM Good work. Very useful. But where'd you get the photo of the friendly COVID virus? http://dave-wheatley.epizy.com/Songbook/R-06.html |

Subject: RE: Dave's Shanty Songbook From: GUEST,Keith Price Date: 21 Jan 22 - 01:02 PM Thank you Dave, you've brought back happy memories. I went on your site only to find the second video on the Long Haul section was myself singing Alabama John Cherokee, from my days with Stormalong John. Cheers. |

Subject: RE: Dave's Shanty Songbook From: Reinhard Date: 21 Jan 22 - 12:36 PM There's an impressive amount of work behind this songbook, so thank you very much for that. BUT for every song there is just one set of lyrics as if it were the authoritative version of the song, and no source or history is given for it, as if it fell on us from heaven. In three of the four examples I checked, the lyrics don't match what's sung in the video shown, so my first guess that the video was the implied source for the lyrics was wrong. |

Subject: Dave's Shanty Songbook From: GUEST,Dave Date: 21 Jan 22 - 09:56 AM Dave Wheatley's Shanty Songbook now has over 300 shanties and songs of the sea. Dave Wheatley's Shanty Songbook It's a free to use library of shanties and songs of the sea. Search for a song either alphabetically (ignore 'The' prefix) or type of shanty. Each song has an example video, a downloadable pdf file of the lyrics, and some even have sheet music. The choice of videos is a bit random. All based on what I like and to have as many different crews as possible. Of course, I am restricted to videos in the public domain, such as on YouTube and the like. It even has the words and video of that famous Mudcat Thread from years ago ... "(I'm a) One-eyed Cormorant (Looking for a Shag)". Everyone is welcome Dave |
