Do you remember long ago, Kathleen?
This was the first line of a lyric which my wife's relative Liam Parr, left in an autograph book in 1917 when he was campaigning for De Valera in the County Clare election. Parr had fought in the Dublin Easter Rising of 1916 and been imprisoned. He played the pipes and sang, being nicknamed "the Minstrel Boy". We would love to find a melody to which Julia could sing it, if this song had been sang.Parr's words , a version of "After Aughrim" by Arthur Gerald Geoghegan are:
Do you remember long ago, Kathleen,
When your lover whispered low
Shall I go or shall I stay, Kathleen, Kathleen
And quick you answered proudly go
And join McNeill and strike a blow
For the Green

Marroon your hair is white as snow Kathleen
Your heart is sad and full of woe
Do you repent you made him go , O, Kathleen Kathleen
And quick you answered proudly no
For better die with O Rahilly so
Than live a slave without a blow
For the green.
We don't know whether Parr sang or recited these lines, but it would be wonderful to find another of his repertoire, if anyone could help. Thanks a million. Robin
