Subject: RE: Lyr Add: My Bloke's a Peaky(from Cecilia Costello) From: GeoffLawes Date: 25 Feb 23 - 06:50 AM The following site mentions Cecelia Costello's song and deals with three Peaky Blinders ballads http://www.planetslade.com/broadside-ballads-peaky-blinder.html It also says Mrs Holden from Halesowen in Dudley contributed an additional verse of "My Bloke's a Peaky": Never trust a Peaky an inch above your knee, I've trusted one, and he's been the ruin of me, He went away and left me with a baby on my knee, My chap's a Peaky, Peaky Blinder. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: My Bloke's a Peaky(from Cecilia Costello) From: GeoffLawes Date: 17 Mar 22 - 11:06 AM This extract from Google Books is about Cecilia Costello and what she said about Peaky Blinder clothing https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=1y2qDwAAQBAJ&pg=PT74&lpg=PT74&dq=My+bloke%27s+a+Peaky,+None+the+worse+for+that.&source=bl&ot It also suggests that 'daff' might be 'dell' or daffodil. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: My Bloke's a Peaky(from Cecilia Costello) From: Howard Jones Date: 17 Mar 22 - 06:45 AM The tune she sings in the recording is quite different, but when I read the lyrics I couldn't help thinking of "My Old Man's a Dustman". |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: My Bloke's a Peaky(from Cecilia Costello) From: GeoffLawes Date: 16 Mar 22 - 07:44 PM "round his neck a daf (??) " I was unsure about "daf" in Cecilia Costello's singing but having just watched the TV documentary "The Real Peaky Blinders" I heard there that "daf" was slang for a scarf. Cecilia talks about the Peakies being known for wearing scarves the recording above. |

Subject: Lyr Add: MY BLOKE'S A PEAKY- Cecilia Costello From: GeoffLawes Date: 16 Mar 22 - 12:33 PM On the tradfolk.co site I came across the song 'My Bloke's a Peaky ' as sung by Cecilia Costello . Here is an on-line recording, from the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library of Cecelia talking about the Peaky Blinders and singing the song https://www.vwml.org/record/RoudFS/S369588 Cecelia sings only one verse. My bloke's a Peaky, None the worse for that. He's got bell- bottomed trousers And a Peaky Blinder's hat. He's got rings round his fingers, and round his neck a daf (??) So all you nosey parkers Can take it out of that. Does anyone have more lyrics? From an on-line post by Jon Wilks I found the suggestion that the song might also be known as " Aye for Saturday Night " |
