Robert Nemiroff was married to Lorraine Hansberry, by the way (Raisin in the Sun).

At least one thread exists on the
Origins of Pay Me My Money Down, cited in the opening post of this thread.
The origins have been traced to the Georgia South Sea Islands by
folk collectors Lydia Parrish and Alan Lomax,
according to the Origins thread.

CINDY, O CINDY
(Robert Nemiroff and Burt D'Lugoff/V)

[Intro]
La, la-la, la-la, lie
La, la-la, la-la, lie

[Verse 1]
I joined the Navy to see the world
But nowhere could I find
A girl as sweet as Cindy
The girl I left behind
I've sailed the wide world over
Can't get her out of my mind

[Chorus]
Cindy, oh, Cindy
Cindy, don't let me down
Write me a letter soon
And I'll be homeward bound
La, la-la, la-la, lie

[Verse 2]
I see her face in every wave
Her lips kiss every breeze
Her loving arms reach out for me
Through calm and stormy seas
At night I pace the lonely deck
Caressed by memories

[Chorus]
Cindy, oh, Cindy
Cindy, don't let me down
Write me a letter soon
And I'll be homeward bound
La, la-la, la-la, lie

[Verse 3]
I know my Cindy's waiting
As I walk the decks alone
Her loving arms reach out for me
Soon I'll be heading home
Then my sailing days will be over
No more will I roam

[Chorus]
Cindy, oh, Cindy
Cindy, don't let me down
Write me a letter soon
And I'll be homeward bound
La, la-la, la-la, lie

[Outro]
La, la-la, la-la, lie

The song Cindy O Cindy was written by Bert Long in 1956. The tune it uses is a song called Pay Me My Money Down first recorded by the Weavers in 1951. Bert Long wrote new words and called it Cindy O Cindy for the Tarriers this got to number 8 in the USA pop charts and was covered by Eddie Fisher and got to number 4. This song is not the same tune as Get Along Cindy. Other version of Cindy O Cindy were in 1961 the highwaymen and in 1956 a British singer called Tony Brent had a British chart hit with this song. Pay me my money down was sung in 1963 Kingtston Trio did a recording as pay me my money down about the same time as the Kingston's recording of pay me my money down sam cook did a fantastic song called win your love for me. I sung the 1956 folk come pop song Cindy at the Captain's bar in Edinburgh and told the history. If you know of others that have the tune of the 1956 song that were written before i would like to no more. thanks from Joe.
