Jack, see the new links in my previous (thanx Mudelf.) Fake? Manhattan calypso is not calypso. Other than that minor detail... it's real as it gets in show biz.

“...The structure of rock n' roll is moronic and sending abroad this kind of musical trash isn't the best way of putting our best foot forward in cultural exchanges with European countries.”
Harry Belafonte, Youth Wants to Know, NBC-TV, Washington, D.C., August, 1959.
[Belafonte, An Unauthorized Biography, Shaw, 1960]

36 years later, Pete Seeger joined The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Harry Belafonte & Arlo Guthrie did the honors. Harry surrendered in 2022.

I don't understand Phil's comments about Trinidadian music and "Day-O" in particular. Was it faked up somehow? Maybe another thread about it?

During this programme it is mentioned that it was the first time that young people had a music they could call their own.

Something that Bill Haley's Comets have in common with Jimmy Shand and the Vienna Phil, is the tremendous amount of LIFT in their dance music.
ECD bands please emulate.

Goodnight Irene, Weavers, 1950
Rock Around the Clock, Bill Haley, 1954
Both produced by Milt Gabler for Decca. He also did Strange Fruit with Billie Holiday.
THE MILT GABLER STORY - My Uncle Milt
(Note: Haley &co don't appear until minute 23.)

Rock & roll scared the pants off The Man on both sides of the Iron Curtain.

Harry Belafonte was convinced he and Manhattan calypso would save the day. Harry's business manager was a U.S. Intelligence operative and Day-O was a British Council tune. Probably nothing to that.

And speaking of the Weavers, Pete Seeger & the U.S. Navy were going to combat rock & roll with… Trinidadian steel drum music. I kid you not. Dead serious they were.

Try Rock Around the Bloc, Timothy Ryback, for the Warsaw Pact perspective... rock & roll rationing, tariffs and import quotas, oh my!

OMG, please don't let this lead to yet more tired "discussions" on The Cat about "What is Folk Music"!!!    Surely we're all old enough and wise enough to realise that it is all related and all relevant.

Perhaps a more fruitful/interesting discussion would be the links between the Brit's Tavistock Institute (and its mates in the CIA et al) regarding their lengthy and ongoing programs re social engineering of the masses,
particularly via music "choices" of the young, including both Rock and Folk (particularly c.1960s) ....

Just don't ask me, I'm too tired and jaded to want to waste what time I have left on the planet!   "Do your own research" as is commonly suggested these days.

R-J (neither rich nor joyful today, it seems.   Harrumph! :)

it is not unexplained, it is a programme about the birth of rock and roll, and Bill Haleys role

Yes, Dick, if you actually discuss it and don't post unexplained links in the Forum.

I remember seeing him on TV on "Six Five Special" - when I was just a teen!! It didn't have much to do with Folk Music then either....
