Subject: Lyr Add: LITTLE SMURF BOAT From: GUEST,SonicBlu Date: 11 Nov 06 - 04:37 PM Ah, Little Smurf Boat. Indeed a beautiful song. Here is the full set of lyrics: LITTLE SMURF BOAT The city's so busy, the noise makes you dizzy The neon lights flash off and on Everyone's in a hurry, you rush and you worry The bus that you wanted is gone But just off the highway, a road leading to The big ships and boats lying afloat There's sailboats and steamers with colorful streamers big ships, and a little blue boat CHORUS There is a little smurf boat in the harbor Blue as the sky with a sail white as snow She is the tiniest boat in the harbor But she will sail to anyplace you want to go The sails are from snowflakes, the paint comes from blue lakes, The beams are from matchsticks and glue All day they eat cream cakes, the ones that Smurf Cookie bakes Join us, you'll have some too First mate and the captain, they share the same cabin, The steward, he sleeps all day long A smurf starts the engine, then plays his accordion, And everyone joins in his song CHORUS She'll sail you to Hong Kong and then on to Boston And anywhere you want to be Jacata or Ceylon, Jamaica or Lisbon Oh what a life on the sea She'll sail you to Oslo and then back to Rio Pass dolphins and whales on the way And Dreamland gets stranded, in Smurfland we've landed I bet this is where you will stay CHORUS (repeat to fade) |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Red Rose Cafe From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 01 Dec 04 - 08:49 PM Thanks, Jim Dixon. I looked but searched with 'T klein,' which I picked up somewhere. Should have remembered to look for the core words. Most of the websites, some with chords, have somewhat different words than those you posted, but, being limited in Dutch to a bit of sketchy translation, it really doesn't matter! I was curious, because translations often change the meaning of the original composition. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Red Rose Cafe From: GUEST,Betsy Date: 11 Jun 04 - 09:45 AM I've always known this as Dutch Song . I was busking in Amstrerdam in the 60's and still retain many friends there. For those looking for the Red Rose Café, I'm sure there must be one somewhere which claims to be IT ,but, the Dutch Song simply says " En een kleine café bij de Haven " forgive my Dutch Grammar - simply in a small café by the harbour. Let's give the credit for this one to our good friends the Cloggies, who are, after all, tremendous supporters of trad. songs in the English tongue in addition to being fanatics of Irish music in general. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Red Rose Cafe From: DonMeixner Date: 23 Feb 04 - 07:40 AM Interesting timing on this song/thread. I wonder if those of us who like the song as song in English by the Furey Brothers will get pilloried for not doing it in the original French. As in the recent Jacques Brel thread. I had always thought the song had a nice dockside French or Belgian feel to it but until now didn't know it had other lyrics and a different name. Don |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Red Rose Cafe From: Joan from Wigan Date: 26 Aug 03 - 02:10 PM Dear medialu No apology necessary, and it's good to have confirmation from another source. Thanks for coming back with that. Maybe there's something about the chorus - I've sung this many times at my folk club, and there are always some who, for whatever reason, don't sing the chorus "correctly". Words get mixed up and sung in the wrong places, and those singing loudly then manage to confuse everyone else! I think there's something to be said for printing out chorus sheets... Joan |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Red Rose Cafe From: Joan from Wigan Date: 25 Aug 03 - 04:25 AM What were the lyrics in the chorus you listened to, medialu? (Always interested in different versions.) The 3-verse version I posted above, I should have said, was passed on to me by a local singer who assured me that the Fureys version is not complete, and that the complete version is as he gave it to me. I cannot confirm this from written versions (all those I've come across are transcriptions from the Fureys). But knowing the Fureys' habit of truncating songs (e.g. When You Were Sweet Sixteen), I have no reason to doubt him. The folk process at work, no doubt! |
