On a Civil War chat room, someone started a thread about favorite Civil War songs. Johnny Has Gone For A Solrer was mentioned. I believe it is far older. French & Indian is not earlier. Perhaps even Anglo-Celtic in roots.

Before I put a foot in my mouth, does anyone know for sure.
