Subject: RE: History of songs From: katlaughing Date: 21 Mar 00 - 12:25 PM Hi, Barbara, welcome to the Mudcat. You will find you will get much quicker and specific responses if you start a thread for each song, with the title or words in the title of the thread. Just by chance, we had a thread about the Lane County Bachelor, which I started with a question for my sister. You will find some interesting reading in this thread. Good luck, katlaughing |

Subject: RE: History of songs From: MMario Date: 21 Mar 00 - 10:17 AM It tends to be different for each song. Looking at the lyric references in this one, I would say it is referring to homestead claims during the post civil war westward expansion. specifically, "homestead" is mentioned, farmers, and references to sod dugouts. |

Subject: History of songs From: GUEST,Barbara Date: 21 Mar 00 - 09:41 AM I am interested in finding HOW to locate sources for historical information on songs - in particular at this time is one, "Starving to death on my government claim" or "Lane County Bachelor". Was it referring to mining, westward expansion, gold rush in particular, etc. Thank you!! Barbara |
