Hi, everyone,

Thanks for the well-wishes...the open mic was wonderful fun. It ended up as a kind of hybrid of jamming and turn-taking with hours of trad, blues, originals, bluegrass...

How do I say it but "cooking with gas."

I can't believe I actually had the gall to sing a song I'd written "on the steering wheel" the same afternoon, without even a once-through. I love 12-bar blues in G for that. I made a good goof, but then that's maybe why they didn't hire me to host, eh? **BG** Anyhow, it's guaranteed to have a different tune next time. It was great to have mandolin and sax breaks to make it music.

Trying to recall what Mom and I sang together...St. Louis Blues and (pre-menopausal moment). Willie-O, do you remember if we did a train song?

Pictures? Wellllllll...I forgot both camera and film at home, so I'm crossing my fingers that the disposable one and pictures taken by someone else will turn out okay. I promised W-O that I wouldn't send any bad pictures to bbc.

"Nom de 'Cat" ? God, I love it. CH, it's got to be a treat to play with your mom. I played hammered dulcimer in a tune on my son's heavy metal band demo tape a few years ago, and now he plays mando in our Irish folk group. It's great for a parent/child relationship to evolve into a good friendship.

It went great! Host for the open stage was Keith Glass from Prairie Oyster (big time Canadian country band).

Fun in smoky bars. Lots of young Perth talent, (made me think about calling a couple of them up to form a unit...) and us not so young types. I haven't done one of those in a long time.

Film at 11, maybe a little later. Pictures were taken, in fact...and will be goin to bbc.

I recently met someone who has an octave mandolin; looking forward to seeing and hearing it. Maybe even trying it, if he'll let me. Over all though, I like the adjustable pitch of the fret-free instruments.

I don't have it but Charlie Musslewhite { Blues Harp } used to record with a string quartet - you might want to check it out for ideas. Lyle Lovetts cello player does some real interesting things. And if you ever want to try out the wonderful world of fretted instruments { after you've mastered the cello} the octave mandolins and mandocellos are tuned to the same intervals. The Modern Mandolin Quartet has recorded some great stuff - check em out.

Keeping in mind that I'm still a beginner...doing Grade III and IV in accordance with the RCMT syllabus...which means my arpeggios are slow, shifts inconsistent and I can only play a few notes up high:

with folk jamming: kind of a hybrid of countermelody and bass.

with blues jamming: same thing. Also, blues is an inspiration to practise arpeggios, common intervals and non-cello techniques like hammer-on, pull-off, slide. The RCMT studies are thoroughly lacking in musical interest so a bit of blues feeds my ear.

Cello also makes a nice variable drone for minor or modal oldies like "When I Was In My Prime," the only song I can sing while I "chell." People seem to like voice and cello, so I plan to add more traddie stuff this way.

Summary: voice is my first instrument; on cello I try to play what I might harmonize. I've even been tossed a break or two and survived. E major is my next personal cello-practice project; no open strings, lots of shifts and obviously a mainstay of capo-free blues. It doesn't officially arise until RCMT Grade V but I need to know how to do it, like, yesterday! And by the way, my vibrato stinks.

Thanks for asking, Wesley. I do like to bubble over on the topic of crossover instruments. As I learn more, I'd like to write a string trio or quartet (maybe quintet) that includes a banjo along with the usual array of bowed strings. But that's another thread...

Crowhugger - Tell us more about how you use the cello in your music. I've always loved the cello and thought that it's been underrated and would work well in folk formats. Do you use it on blues tunes also? Used properly the cello is capable of a lot of sounds. I heard one guy use it like a mini-bass. And best of luck tomorrow night.

For any Mudcatters within a manageable drive of Perth, Ontario:

Crowhugger and her mother, Lana, will be at the Crown & Thistle Thursday, April 13th for the open mic. The host band/person will do the opening set, then the stage opens to those who come to play. We'll be there! The Crown & Thistle is at 44 Foster St. in Perth. Most anyone in town can give you directions...Perth isn't very big and it IS very friendly.

It's an hour east of Ottawa, 45 mins. north of Kingston, 3 hours NE of Toronto (no cops, no stops) and not so very far south of McDonald's Corners.

We do folk and blues with occasional originals tossed in. (Very occasional!)

I don't have a Mudcat T-shirt to identify me, but chances are that I'll have the only cello in the place! Hope to see you. By the way, we usually manage to get in 2 sets.
