Subject: Lyr Add: YOU'RE A REAL SWEETHEART (Caesar, Friend)

The Red Hot Jazz Archive has 2 recordings of "You're a Real Sweetheart" in RealAudio format:

1. Roger Wolfe Kahn and his Orchestra's 1928 recording can be found on this page, or click here to play. It's mostly instrumental, though. Only one chorus is sung. (Hey, I love this style of music. It reminds me of the soundtracks of old Laurel and Hardy movies.)

2. Another 1928 recording by Lillie Delk Christian with Louis Armstrong and his Hot Four can be found on this page, or click here to play. This has one verse and one chorus.

I transcribed these lyrics from the above 2 files. I don't know if any more verses exist.

YOU'RE A REAL SWEETHEART
(Words, Irving Caesar. Music, Cliff Friend, 1928.)

VERSE: It's mighty hard to find a sweetheart,
Someone who's different from the rest,
And when I'm thinking of a sweetheart,
I mean someone who'll stand the test.
They are so few and far between.
They're not like you. Here's what I mean:

CHORUS: When my pals turned me down, you're the one pal I found.
You're a real sweetheart.
When my darkest day came, you smiled on just the same.
You're a real sweetheart.
Now that I find fate has been kind,
I'll build you a love nest that's all silver lined,
And I'll work and I'll slave for the things that you crave.
You're a real sweetheart.

[Besides the above, also recorded by Clarence Williams (with vocalist Eva Taylor); Ben Selvin and His Orchestra; Arnold Frank Roger's Café Orchestra; Abe Lyman's California Ambassador Hotel Orchestra; Jimmie Noone and His Apex Club Orchestra; Nick Lucas; and Van Dyke Parks.]

You're very welcome, Horst, 'twas an interesting search! Don't know the song myself, but Satchmo can do no wrong. Does it have particular meaning for you?

Noreen

Hi, Noreen, thank you so much! I contacted the Kirk Collection which is very helpful. I never knew Louis Armstrong recorded the title, this information is valuable to me as well. Horst

'You're a Real Sweetheart'(Caesar/Friend) was recorded by Louis Armstrong in the 1920s and is also available on a piano roll played by Lindsay McPhail in 1928. (Things you find on the net!) I found other stuff about recordings, but no lyrics, sorry!

Being aware of the fact that the term "sweetheart" is contained in many songs I am looking for the lyrics of a title called "You Are My (A?) Real Sweetheart". I don't know whether it is originally a pop, folk or jazz song. Thanks in advance!
