Sheffer & Blakely's latest success
LIZA LOVES YOU
Words and Music by
Chas. H. Sheffer
of
Lester & Allen's
Big Minstrels,
as sung in all the
principal theatres
of the country
in their latest production entitled
"The Wrong Girl"
[1885]

I had a dream the other night, the funniest dream of all.
Dreamt I saw the "brand new coon" get over our garden wall.
He came right up the old sidewalk and called for his turtledove,
And says, "Oh Liza, tell me true: Who is it that you love?"

CHO: Your little Liza loves you, yes, your little Liza loves you,
Loves you in the spring and the fall.
Your little Liza loves you, yes, your little Liza loves you.
Your little Liza loves you one and all.

Oh, when I wake from dat dream, found it was no joke.
Dere I saw the "brand new coon" a-talking to a lot of folks.
Dey want to know what he's doing dere. He called for his turtledove,
And said, "Oh Liza, tell dem all: Who is it that you love?" CHO.

I have more verses:

Come tell me dear, come tell me true
Oh tell me honey do
Come tell me honey, honey do
Who is your turtle dove?
Chorus

Well kiss me honey, kiss me do
You are the one I love
Oh kiss me honey, kiss me do
You are my turtle dove

I took my honey home last night
Beneath that shedding pine
I took my honey home last night
And pressed her lips to mine

It was not you, or you ,or you
Behind that garden wall
It was my wife, bane of my life
She is so big and tall

I have only ever heard this sung, not seen it written down, so those are the words as best I heard them.....I make no guarantee as to their accuracy :)I have an MP3 that I'd be happy to send you though if you would like.

I remember this as a student/rugby song, which was sung as part of a sequence (came after Down By The Riverside, I think). Can't remember if there were any more verses.

The other night I had a dream ,
The funniest dream of all,
I dreamt I saw her standing there
Behind the garden wall,

Little Liza loves you (Honey)
Little Liza loves you (Honey)
Loves you in the Springtime and the Fall (Honey, Honey, Honey, Honey)
Little Liza loves you (Honey)
Little Liza loves you (Honey)
Loves you best of all. (Honey, Honey, Honey, Honey)

The Honeys are sung by everyone, and the multiple ones start while the leader is singing "Fall"/"all"

Wassail! V

Subject: Other verses, origin of song?

I saw an earlier message enquiring as to "I had a dream the other night" but I am looking for ANOTHER song that goes like this:

I had a dream the other night, the strangest dream of all,
I dreamt I saw a tall dark man beside my garden wall,

Oh, Honey, Honey, Honey, Honey,
Lil' eyes I loves you honey,
Lil' eyes I loves you honey,
Loves you in the springtime and the fall,
Lil' eyes I loves you honey,
Lil' eyes I loves you honey,
Loves you best of all.

He came around to my back door and asked for turtledove,
He said to me now tell me true, who is the one you love? (Refrain again)

HTML line breaks added. --JoeClone, 28-Aug-02.
