Subject: RE: Multilingual song texts - a resource From: GUEST,Liland (yeah, I know it'll call me guest!) Date: 28 Sep 00 - 07:41 PM I will once I figure how to get it to recognize me again. I just joined this morning and have not figured out the "how to reset cookies" part yet, so (this being the third computer I've posted from today, none of them my own) it doesn't recognize me (yet?)... Thanks for the "WOW" though! Liland |

Subject: Multilingual song texts - a resource From: Haruo Date: 28 Sep 00 - 11:52 AM In a long-running thread that began "Subject: Lyrics request for french folk songs" | From: fontain@cnwl.igs.net | Date: 31-Dec-96 - 01:48 AM" I ran into this from some sort of Mudcat person (I'm not sure exactly how this place is run...): : Subject: RE: : From: dick greenhaus : Date: 03-Sep-97 - 10:23 AM : : We have a few problems in dealing with non-English-language songs. : a) We haven't found a way to search on accented leters, although : we can enter such in the database. b)Our contributors seem to : overwhelmingly favor English-language materials. c) I usually wind : up editing, and I'm totally incompetent in any language except : English.Considering the wild folk-spelling variations we receive, : I think that the editing is essential. : : : Having said all this, I'd love to get more non-English-language : material. Anybody have any suggestions on how best to deal with : the problems? I don't have any particular expertise or solutions to offer for the editing of such songs for the Database, but I do have a source of texts to offer. I have spent much of the last few months compiling and editing my online Esperanto hymn resource, TTT-Himnaro Cigneta, whose table of contents is at http://www.geocities.com/cigneto/pretaj.html It now contains 150 texts (with some duplication due to multiple tune settings), of which roughly 125 are in Esperanto, about half the remainder in English, and the rest scattered over a dozen other languages from Dakota to Vietnamese to Latin. Most of these are not folk texts in any strict sense, but some are, and some others (e.g. many Christmas carols) are naturalized folk songs even though they are well-documented as to author and composer etc. I have also supplied an index of the Christmas materials in the hymnal, by English title, for English-speakers who may be looking for Esperanto versions of well-known carols, etc. This index is at http://www.geocities.com/cigneto/thcind/xmas-en.html Some of the non-Esperanto materials that may be of use or interest to some Mudcatters include Leanabh an Àigh (Mary Macdonald's original Gaelic underlying Macbean's Child in the Manger) Un flambeau, Jeannette, Isabelle (French original of "Bring a torch, Jeannette, Isabella") Estennialon de tsonoue (Huron text underlying "'Twas in the moon of wintertime"; this was the first Christmas carol written in North America, ca. 1640, shortly before the Iroquois massacred the Huron Nation; the author was subsequently canonized by the Romans) In Bethlem Town (my original Christmas/Innocents carol to "The Pesky Sarpent") Vietnamese first verse of Away in a Manger, set to "Flow gently, sweet Afton" The Ribs and Terrors in the Whale (Father Mapple's hymn from Moby Dick, set to Old Hundredth - also the old Dutch Reformed Psalm text it's based on) Come Then, Let's Have Breakfast (my Easter Monday Breakfast Ballad, translated from the Esperanto, set to Foundation, aka Bellevue) Ale mentshn zaynen brider (Yiddish text - All people are brothers...) I invite comments and suggestions for improvement. Liland Brajant Ros' Redaktoro, THC |
