I'd totally agree with you. The site in question however is small, doesn't need the functionality of mudcat, and cost is a real issue.

I'm basically looking for cheap (or free with an advertising link), solutions that just provide the basics. Search capabilities, for example, simply aren't an issue.

Considering that this is the best forum I've ever seen; if I were setting up a web site, the first thing I would do is talk to Max's company. then, if I couldn't afford them, I'd probably rethink my options.

A collegue of mine is writing a website on which she wants to have some sort of threaded bulletin board.

I know there are lots of things available at the CGI Resource Index.

However, neither of us are particularly technically minded, so anything that involves editing perl or UNIX code is pretty much out of the question.

I've also seen in the past, some sites that offer a much simpler solution, as long a link (normally via a small advertising banner) back to the home page of the script writers page. I can't locate any of these just now.

As long as the 'logo' in question was relatively small and tasteful, this probably wouldn't be a problem.

So, does anyone have any experiences, recommendations as to the best way forward?

It doesn't need to be hugely sophisticated, simply functional, easy to navigate, and easy to set up.

I'm not sure, but I don't think it needs to be totally free, if something far better can be done for a reasonable price.

Grateful for any thoughts.
