The tale of Dierdre (Derdriu) and the Sons of Usnoth (Uisliu) starts on p. 8 of Thomsas Kinsella's translation of 'The Tain' (Oxford University Press). Dierdre's sorrowful chant, rather than song, is on pp. 18-19. This is a literal, not metical, translation from Gaelic.

Dear Bruce,

Thanks very much for the reference. Not sure this sounds like what I recall; -- the whole phrase, rather than the name only, sticks in memory. Before I trundle off to the library in search of these excellent compendia of treeware: you wouldn't know of a www. location, perchance?

Since I've seen your answers in other threads, and am much impressed by your acquaintance with the area of my search, might I ask that if you should, subsequently, discover a song reference to "Lorna Doone," you would be so kind as to post to this thread or send a note to my personal page? Thank you for the bother.

Shula

My recollection is that this is the Dierdre that married the Sons of Usnoth, and were exiled from Ireland to Scotland. I forget whether the sons of Usnoth were killed there or after a return to Ireland. An old Irish tale, about which a song was made. No Lorna Doone here, though

Tune is "Deirdre's Lamentation for the Sons of Usnoth Irish" in O'Farrell's Pocket Companion, II, c 1811. Verses and music in Bunting's 1840 collection.

Vaguely recall a couple of lovely songs; one about Lorna Doone and one that made reference to Dierdre o' the Sorrows. Any help finding these would be much appreciated.

Shula
