It may be redundant, but no one has said this yet (in this thread) so the letters mean Civilian Conservation Corps. As an aside, they built Guernsey (WY, USA) dam and lake, and some really neat Medieval type picnic shelters and out houses.

Right alongside the CCC in the pantheon of the New Deal was the WPA, which the bureaucrats called the Works Progress Administration, but a lot of other people knew to stand for "We Poke Along". I don't know what informal readings of CCC may have been around.

The CCC was a New Deal creation aimed at fighting inflation by sponsoring outdoor construction work for the unemployed.

A while back I came across a thread relating to the C.C.C., who, I believe were some sort of cheap-labour construction company working on conservation projects. Does anyone out there have lyrics to the song "Why did I join the C.C.C.@ or any others?
