If this is the same song, Ive got a recording somewhere of the late, great Ted Hawkins singing it just with an acoustic guitar. Not being much of a guitarist, he tuned to open G, cut out all the minor chords and slid his gloved(!) fingers up and down the fretboard. But he had the best soul voice you´ll ever hear anywhere!

We are blessed with a son who has great musical taste, by which I mean he likes, among other things, a lot of the stuff we 'grew up on' in the sixties and beyond. He recently made me a gift of an Impressions "Greatest Hits" CD, which opens with the original version of the fine and relatively unique Curtis Mayfield tune "Gypsy Woman." I liked this tune when it first came out (I was in high school at the time) and I like it now. I also have a Ry Cooder version (from his fine and relatively early CD "The Slide Area"), which is probably my favorite rendition of the tune. I also have it by Santana (on his "prits Dancing in the Flesh" CD). No disrespect to Carlos here, but this version is a distant third on my list.

All of which leads to the following questions:

1. Do any Mudcatters know of any other reasonable available recorded versions or renditions of this tune? 2. Are the rumors that (gasp!) Brian Hyland, of early 60's A.M. radio fame, did a version of it true? 3. Has anyone had any success playing this tune on the Pennywhistle? If so, what key whistle do you regard as most 'felicitous'? 4. Does anyone know where to get the sheet music?
