It is just a coincidence that your initials come out to match those of the KT3?

It has always been my understanding that mr Guard left the Trio to persure his own vision, which was much more traditional and therefore less commercial than the direction that the group was heading in. Stewart was an aquitence of the group and an admirer of Guard's. If there was bitterness, it was from Nick and Bob. As for Stewart's voice, I love it still, though he's lost alot of his range{ain't we all?}. Then again, I've been a lifelong Stewart fan. Mike Bennett

I have always thought that Stewart was a VERY talented songwriter. But I think his banjo playing was nowhere near the level of Guard's (although I have heard arguments to the contrary) and Stewart's singing voice is so outstandingly bad that it takes both of the other members to overshadow it. Not the case with Guard.

I guess it is obvious that I am not a Stewart fan.

But, to his credit, John blew new life into the KT - most especially through his songwriting. Before he came along, the members of the Trio were generally tacking a few alterations to obviously trad songs and claiming to have written them - unfortunately a common practice at the time. There were some notable exceptions penned by each of the KT.

I have never heard the story of Dave Guard's departure from the Trio. I have the sense that there were some bad feelings involved because one is hard pressed to find pictures of the original three or of Dave, alone, on the net. Does anyone know what happened? I think that during the Whiskey Hill days, Dave was still unaware of his health issues; but I could be wrong.

While I have always been a Dave Guard fan, and love the way he did The Diamond and Deportee with the WHS, you can't convince me the Trio was worse off with Stewart, no Fin' way. Mike

In '89 he put out a CD of his own called "up & in" (as opposed to down and out). When the big Kingston Trio reunion was on, I was impressed all over again by the magic the original 3 still seemed to have, and which the rest of the followup just never did.

Dave is undoubtedly picking his banjo somewhere in the hereafter. He died from lymphoma on March 22, 1991 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

After he left the Kingston Trio, I left them too. He started a group called the Whiskey Hill Singers. I thought them interesting. Don't know how long they lasted nor what he did next. Must be an old man now, like me.

Andrew
