Subject: RE: LYR ADD Youpe! Youpe! From: Frank Phillips Date: 03 Oct 97 - 10:45 AM Tim Thanks for the words to La Bastrinque. I have it as an instrumental on a CD somewhere (possibly Richard Thompson's Strict Tempo but I'd have to verify that) and the notes are in the Fiddler's Fake book by Oak Publications. Also Youpe is in Folk songs of Quebec by Edith Fulton Fowke and Richard Johnson, Waterloo Publications. Frank |

From: Tim Jaques tjaques@netcom.ca Date: 03 Oct 97 - 09:57 AM Incidently, I copied the lyrics directly from the album liner so I take no responsibility for grammatical accuracy. Some of it looks odd to me but perhaps they are attempting to capture the sound of slang or slurring of words. |
Subject: Lyr Add: YOUPE! YOUPE! SUR LA RIVIERE From: Timothy Jaques tjaques@netcom.ca Date: 03 Oct 97 - 09:53 AM I told someone Rachel? Shula? that I would post the words to this song, so here they are. Actually this constitutes three short songs, which Stringband sang one after another on their "Live" album. They are lively French-Canadian songs.
"Youpe" is pronounced "YOO-PEE" and is I suppose the French equivalent of "Yippie". It is also the name of the mascot of the Montreal Expos, but whether taken from this song or not I don't know.
