Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Down among the Dead Men From: Ged Fox Date: 30 May 12 - 07:31 PM The tune is given in Chappell (as mentioned above) more than a decade before R V-W was born. Chappell refers to late 17th century & early 18th century sources for the tune. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Down among the Dead Men From: GUEST Date: 30 May 12 - 07:07 AM I have found some places claiming the tune to have been written by Vaughan Williams. Could anyone clarify if a previous tune existed or whether the tune is in fact traditional? Cheers! |

Subject: RE: Down amoung the dead men From: dick greenhaus Date: 06 Oct 97 - 05:18 AM Hi- Actually, a search for dead men will produce a mess of hits; Down Among the Dead Men is the 48th. A narrower search would be for [dead men]--the brackets tell the database that you're looking for a specific phrase rathr than two isolated words. That search locates the song as the first hit.

Subject: RE: Down amoung the dead men From: Murray Date: 06 Oct 97 - 03:35 AM Sorry, I should have searched the DT under the title. Foolish me! I asked for "dead men" and got nil. Anyway, you'll see my text is slightly different from the DT one, being earlier for one thing, mentioning Queen Anne; Dyer did sing the "King" version, but he didn't necessarily write it. |

Subject: Lyr Add: DOWN AMONG THE DEAD MEN From: Murray Date: 05 Oct 97 - 04:18 AM This is the copy in Chappell's "Popular Music of the Olden Time" (1859), II.643: (1) Here's a health to the Queen, and a lasting peace, To faction an end, to wealth increase. Come let's drink it while we have breath, For there's no drinking after death. And he that will this health deny, Down among the dead men, Down among the dead men, Down down, down, down, Down among the dead men let him lie. [similarly:] (2) Let charming beauty's health go round, In whom celestial joys are found, And may confusion still pursue The senseless woman-hating crew; And they that woman's health deny, Down among the dead men ... let them lie! (3) In smiling Bacchus' joys I'll roll, Deny no pleasure to my soul; Let Bacchus' health round briskly move, For Bacchus is a friend to Love. And he that will this health deny [etc.] (4) May love and wine their rites maintain, And their united pleasures reign, While Bacchus' treasure crowns the board, We'll sing the joys that both afford; And they that won't with us comply, Down [etc.]. --Later on [time of George I] line 1 was changed to "King". The tune, says Chappell, "was a great favorite with the late Samuel Wesley". |
