Subject: Lyr Add: LITTLE RED SCHOOL HOUSE (Brennan/Wilson)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 27 Apr 08 - 08:07 PM

IN THE LITTLE RED SCHOOL HOUSE
James A. Brennan, Al Wilson,
New York: Edw. B. Marks Music Co., 1922.

1. Sometimes I think I was a little fool,
Back in the days when I used to go to school.
When I was a kid, Gee! how I hated
The little place where I was educated.
Altho' I didn't know it, I was lucky then.
I wish that I was back again.

CHORUS: In the little red school house, with my book and slate,
In the little red school house, I was always late.
I long to be back there where I was a scholar,
In the days of yore;
How I'd stand right up there and holler,
"Two and two are four!"
When we should have been learning
About the golden rule,
Our little hearts were yearning
For the swimming pool.
Why, we could hardly wait for the four o'clock bell.
The moment that we heard it, we would run like mad!
Oh! gee, I want to be,
In the little red school house.

2. Each morn, when mother said, "It's after eight.
If you don't hurry, you surely will be late,"
I'd start down the road, my footsteps lagging.
Of course I went, but I was always bragging:
"You bet when I get bigger, no more school for me,"
But now that's where I want to be. CHORUS

PATTER: Ten o'clock the spelling lesson's just begun,
Johnny throws an ink-ball just for fun.
Hits the teacher's ear with an awful spat,
She turns around and says, "Who did that?"
Pretty little Percy in the very front row,
Raises up his hand and says, "Teacher, I know"
Little Johnny whispers to the teacher's pride,
"You just wait till I get you outside."
Johnny's told to stand up with his face to the wall,
He says, "I do' wanna" and he tries to stall,
If I stood up there, I'd take an awful chance,
I got a great big tear in the seat of my pants.
Teacher sends you home to wash your face and then!
You say, "Aw, what's the use? It just gets dirty again!"
Oh! gee, I want to be, in the little red school house.

Subject: Lyr Add: THE OCEANA ROLL
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 10 Nov 02 - 03:13 PM

Transcribed from the sheet music image at the University of Colorado Digital Sheet Music Collection:

THE OCEANA ROLL
(Words by Roger Lewis, music by Lucien Denni, copyright 1911.)

Billy McCoy was a musical boy
On the cruiser Alabama.
He was there on that piana
Like a fish down in the sea
When he rattled off some harmony.
Ev'ry night out on the ocean,
He would get that raggy notion,
Start that syncopated motion lovin'ly;
No one could sleep 'way out there on the deep
When Billy cut loose out at sea.

CHORUS: Each fish and worm begins to twist and squirm.
The ship goes in a dip and does a corkscrew turn.
Just see that smoke so black sneak from that old smokestack!
It's floatin' right to heaven and it won't come back.
Now here and there you'll see a stool and chair
A-slippin' 'round the cabin shoutin', "I don't care!"
And then the hammock starts a-swingin'
And the bell begins a-ringin'
While he's sittin' at that piana,
There on the Alabama,
Playin' the Oceana Roll.

England or Spain, it was always the same:
He'd be there at that piana,
On the cruiser Alabama,
Ev'ry mornin', noon and night.
He would keep it up with all his might.
Ev'ry time he'd start a-playin',
All the boys would start a-swayin'.
Ev'ry one would keep a-sayin', "Don't you stop!"
Sailors, take care! oh, you sailors, beware!
For Bill will play on 'til you drop. CHORUS

In a little red shool house, with my book and slate
In a little red school house, where I was always late
How I long to be back there where I was a scholar
In the days of Yore
How I loved to stand up and hollar, 2 and 2 are 4

When we should have learning about the golden rule
Our little hearts were yearning for the swimming pool
Well, we could hardly wait for school to let out.
The moment that the bell rang we'd run and shout
Oh gee, I want to be, in the litte red school house.

Wow time trip. My absolutest favorite album as a child in the early 60's was "A Child's Very Favorite Song Book" by Twinkle Records. I read verse one and two just popped into my head. My mom sent the album over when she heard I got a turntable for Christmas,(Of course she never threw it away) so now I'll have to see if it's still playable and check the lyrics. The album cover doesn't credit a single artist !! The cute little blonde girl with a white kitten and their matching blue eyes must have been enough to sell the albums

The lyrics for thye "Billy McCoy" song were the exact ones. My friend was really pleased! Thanks! The lyrics for the "In a Little Red School House" song weren't the ones though. my friend gave me the lyrics for the first stanza of the song, which she said has mand stanzas, and maybe it will help to find the right "Red School House" song. The words are:

In a little red school house with my book and slate In a little red school house I was always late How I long to be back there where I was a scholar in the days of yore how I love to stand up there and hollar 2 and 2 make 4.

Thanks, Carol

Here's Little Red Schoolhouse,

LITTLE RED SCHOOLHOUSE

Well there's a little red schoolhouse
At a turn in the road
Like a picture on a postcard
From a long time ago
And the little red schoolhouse
Is looking mighty fine
Now you say that she's coming to
The end of the line

Hear the sound of the children
So clear and bright
Going all around the school yard
In the sweet sunlight
Hear the sound of the children
Echoing away
Like the sound of the steamboat
And the locomotive train
And hold on, hold on
To that sound
Every passing day

Well there's an owl in the backyard
And a loon on the lake
And a bear on the mountain
And a moose in the way
And a sound on the autumn wind
Calling me to stay
It's the sound of the school bell
Ringing in a new day

So hold on, hold on
To the sound
Every passing day

Of the little red school house
Of the little red schoolhouse
