Subject: RE: BS: Bernard - Please stop............. From: Jeri Date: 20 Feb 01 - 09:30 PM Hey Susan, I was bitching about people bitching. Now I'm bitching about people bitching about people who didn't notice I was bitching about bitching. Or more precicely, I'm bitching about people bitching about no one bitching about bitching when I was. Here's another tip - if the thread number is lower than the "RE:" ones around it, but it looks like a new thread, somebody changed the title. |

Subject: Don't it just make you mad? From: Snuffy Date: 19 Feb 01 - 08:49 PM I tried the "messages since your last visit" for a couple of days, but it didn't seem to be as convenient as refreshing the main threads page. So I've just gone back to going to the main threads, starting where I left off and working my way up to the top. Works much better for me. YMMV. |

Subject: RE: BS: Bernard - Please stop............. From: wysiwyg Date: 19 Feb 01 - 04:27 PM OK it's definite. I'm gonna volunteer to be the one who bitches that no one is bitching about people bitching, or not. It's just too disorgaized with some people doing it some of the time and other times, NO ONE has that job covered. Thoughtless ragtags! That oughtta cover it. I wanna Permathread of my own for it too. *G* ~S~ |

Subject: RE: BS: Bernard - Please stop............. From: Mary in Kentucky Date: 19 Feb 01 - 01:00 PM Yeah, but Bernard is a bit distracted lately...something about becoming a Grandpa or something. Can't believe some folks get excited about such things! |

Subject: RE: BS: Bernard - Please stop............. From: John J Date: 19 Feb 01 - 12:44 PM I'm absolutely sure that Bernard would not wish to cause ANYONE a problem, no matter how minor. I know this. He's that sort of person. John J (back in action) |

Subject: RE: BS: Bernard - Please stop............. From: Jeri Date: 19 Feb 01 - 12:31 PM Some of us bitch about people bitching. Seriously, this is not a big deal, just sometimes irritating. And it's not about just Bernard, who I'm glad is around, because a few people do this. |

Subject: What is the big deal? From: Amergin Date: 19 Feb 01 - 12:07 PM The things people bitch about.... |

Subject: RE: BS: Bernard - Please stop............. From: Jon Freeman Date: 19 Feb 01 - 09:33 AM Joe changes (or can change) both Mary. JoeClones can only change the one you mention. I did the subject headings in a thread recently to stop whole posts flashing for Netscape users. Jon |

Subject: RE: BS: Bernard - Please stop............. From: Mary in Kentucky Date: 19 Feb 01 - 09:28 AM You're right Jeri. He changes the subject heading which appears in the New Messages listing. |

Subject: RE: BS: Bernard - Please stop............. From: wysiwyg Date: 19 Feb 01 - 09:26 AM Bernard is not the only one who sometimes changes subject lines. I think most of us don't even notice it, but once in awhile I'll see that someone has used the subject line to amplify or clarify the thrust of their post. It's not unlike creative titles for e-mails so that if you are one who saves mails, you can recall the thing when you see its snappy title-- a copy-writing thing. And Joe has suggested (I think) that we put song titles there if a thread is a compilation of lyric additions. So they search up easier I guess, or maybe that was before SuperSearch. If that is still a desrirable thing, then this thread may cause some confusion. I think it is unfortunate that a thread aimed at a problem is titled at a person. I'd sure be embarrassed if it happened to me. I would hope (ask) that Bugsy might send Bernard a PM to acknowledge that the problem was the problem, not the person. And I'd hope Bernard wasn't so mortified by the thread that he's stopped coming to Mudcat, and would thus miss the PM altogether. Bugsy, I do have Bernard's e-mail if it would be useful to message him that way. Also, Jeri, does the topic need to be considered in the FAQ? ~Susan |

Subject: RE: BS: Bernard - Please stop............. From: Jeri Date: 19 Feb 01 - 09:26 AM No, I believe we're talking about the subject line of individual posts, not threads. The forum search looks for individual messages. If you were looking for threads with the prefix "LYR ADD," it won't pull messages that are in a thread titled "What's this song?" If you look for what someone said about a certain subject, the search won't pull up "Huh???" or "Oh no, not that again!" |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Bernard - Please stop............. From: Jon Freeman Date: 19 Feb 01 - 09:16 AM Hang on, is there confusion here? Joe can do something that even the JoeClones can't. He can and occasionally does change the main thread heading which is different to the subject headings attached to each individuual post to a thread. Jon |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Bernard - Please stop............. From: Jeri Date: 19 Feb 01 - 09:10 AM But Joe only changes the subject line, but he's very specific about the titles. A thread title like "Oh, yeah..." (fictitious) doesn't give me a clue, and everyone knows I desperately need clues. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Bernard - Please stop.............. From: Jon Freeman Date: 19 Feb 01 - 09:10 AM Susan, the "Messages since last visit" uses the subject heading so YES. I'm not sure what to think on this one (and it is not my problem) other than to suggest that PERHAPS if a post is worthy of a change of subject heading, it is worthy of a new thread. Another point is that whereas replies to a newsgroup to the new subject would contain the new heading (and a clear new route of threads can be seen), Mudcat is linear and I think always uses the original Thread heading so there is nothing to be gained by a change for one post. Subject: RE: BS: Bernard - Please stop............. From: wysiwyg Date: 19 Feb 01 - 08:59 AM You guys, I'm confused. Do you mean about changing the SUBJECT LINE of the post? ~S~ |

Subject: RE: BS: Bernard - Please stop............. From: Jeri Date: 19 Feb 01 - 08:26 AM It's a minor annoyance - I often click on a thread I've just read because it looks like a new thread. The solution, as Bugsy pointed out, is to avoid clicking on messages by certain people. No offence intended - it just keeps me from swearing. ("Sh*t! I just read this!!") Of course, I probably wouldn't have clicked on the White Hare thread again (at least not for a while), but my name was in the new title. You can also check the thread number, but that normally is too much work. Also, if the link is the same color as a visited link, you've read the thread.

Subject: Bernard - Please stop............. From: Bugsy Date: 18 Feb 01 - 09:07 PM Please Bernard - stop changing the thread names when you post. I use the "messages since your last visit" to check through the forum and your changing the names of the threads makes it appear that you are starting new threads, even though you are posting to existing ones. Because of this it has become very time consuming to get through the postings to the point that I have begun to ignore your postings altogether for the sake of expediency. I don't like doing this because I'm sure you have some very worthwhile comments to make. I just don't have the time to keep going back to threads that I have already read because you have put a new title on your posting. Sorry to sound such a grouch. CHeers Bugsy |
