Subject: RE: Both Sides Of The Tweed : Dick Gaughan From: Tootler Date: 04 Sep 06 - 06:28 AM Although Rosin the Beau ends in the major it actually shifts to the minor in the middle of both sections. Although I agree there are similarities, Dick's tune has a wider range than Rosin the Beau. |
Subject: RE: Both Sides Of The Tweed : Dick Gaughan From: GUEST,johnmc Date: 04 Sep 06 - 06:01 AM Don Couold you expand on "The Third Voice" - I'm intrigued. |
Subject: RE: Both Sides Of The Tweed : Dick Gaughan From: GUEST,Jack Campin Date: 04 Sep 06 - 05:49 AM So what? Many tunes are derived from others by simply changing mode, it's a standard procedure. (The minor-mode "Frere Jacques" in Mahler's first symphony for a classical music example). |

Subject: RE: Both Sides Of The Tweed : Dick Gaughan From: Genie Date: 04 Sep 06 - 02:50 AM Lines 2 and 4 are very close, melodically, to "Rosin the Bow," but I think it's a bit of a stretch to say lines 1 and 3 are. Not even the same same chord pattern. :) |
Subject: RE: Both Sides Of The Tweed : Dick Gaughan From: GUEST,Jack Campin Date: 03 Sep 06 - 05:27 PM The tune isn't entirely Dick's own. Basically it's a slowed-down version of "Rosin the Beau". I doubt if Dick consciously adapted it, and it works so well he deserves the credit for it anyway. |
Subject: RE: Both Sides Of The Tweed : Dick Gaughan From: weerover Date: 03 Sep 06 - 04:03 PM Drifting a little from topic, I remember during the Thatcher years the late Danny Kyle joked, "I can't wait for Labour to win an election, so I can hear Dick Gaughan sing a folk song again". Boy, the wee man didn't see the current lot coming. wr |
Subject: RE: Both Sides Of The Tweed : Dick Gaughan From: Genie Date: 03 Sep 06 - 03:38 PM I have a gorgeous recording of this song by Rene Corbin, on the album "Boudicca." Haven't heard Mary Black's, but I'm sure it's beautiful too. This is a song I added to my repertoire, done as a duet with a friend who does Irish whistle in addition to vocals. It's such a beautiful song that audiences appreciate it even if they don't know much of the background. |

Subject: RE: Both Sides Of The Tweed : Dick Gaughan From: the lemonade lady Date: 03 Sep 06 - 02:58 PM We supported Dick at The Court Yard Theatre in Hereford last December. He is such a nice guy. After our set he remained seated and wished he could hear more of us. Ah what can I say. Bit like the 'X' Factor! Sal |
Subject: RE: Both Sides Of The Tweed : Dick Gaughan From: GUEST Date: 03 Sep 06 - 02:53 PM Will Oldham of Kentucky has a re-written version of this song called 'Idea and Deed' on his Drag City album 'Joya'. |
Subject: RE: Both Sides Of The Tweed : Dick Gaughan From: GUEST,Ms Penelope Rutledge Date: 03 Sep 06 - 02:39 PM Neither side of Tweed is worth bothering about. They're both without merit. |
Subject: RE: Both Sides Of The Tweed : Dick Gaughan From: Nick Date: 03 Sep 06 - 02:10 PM If you look on his website at Both Sides the Tweed he explains all about the song - it's background and his contribution to it etc |
Subject: RE: Both Sides Of The Tweed : Dick Gaughan From: GUEST,DonMeixner Date: 03 Sep 06 - 01:10 PM I have heard this song only done by women. Mary Black and a young women from Texas in a band called Clandestine. Mary Black was wonderful, the girl from Texas was chilling. She was able to sing unisons with the violin that rang out "The Third Voice" from the air. Just wonderful. Don |
Subject: RE: Both Sides Of The Tweed : Dick Gaughan From: weerover Date: 03 Sep 06 - 11:38 AM First time for many years, listened to Dick Gaughan live last night at a small intimate venue with an audience of about 30 - superb! I always thought the song was his own work, but he told us he found it in a book in the National Library of Scotland in 1979, "tweaked" the words and replaced the tune ("shite") with his own. wr |
Subject: RE: Both Sides Of The Tweed : Dick Gaughan From: Alex Date: 18 Oct 97 - 11:28 PM Dick Gaughan has his own site at www.dickalba.demon.co.uk/main.htm where he is putting up a lot of his and other songs. If you get the chance, DO NOT miss this man in concert. I saw him in 1995 at the Old Town School in Chicago. He was on stage for two hours and fortyfive minutes (no break). He is intense and commands the room. At the end of the show I was ready to go back to Britain, singlyhandedly overthrow the government, put the royal family and entire list of Burke's Peerage up against a wall and shoot the lot of them! |
