Subject: RE: Lyr Req: He went over the lowlands like thund From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 01 Mar 01 - 06:27 AM It's one of the Earsdon Sword Dance songs. You can see the full text and music, together with the accompanying play, here: Notes on the Sword Dancers' song and Interlude (John Stokoe, 1887). It's part of the very interesting Mummers' Plays Collection Ashley Hutchings used the melody for his "Calling On Song", two transcriptions of which are lurking in the DT. Malcolm |

Subject: He went over the lowlands like thunder? From: Dunc Date: 01 Mar 01 - 06:02 AM I'm trying to find the words and title of a song the Watersons used to sing. I've checked their website and can't find it. It starts with these lines.... Oh now people give ear to my story I have come from afar for to tell The story of (Brave Bonaparte?) I confess that I knew him well He went over the lowlands like thunder Made nations to quiver and quake Many thousands stood gazing in wonder At the havoc he always did make Any help greatfully accepted - Thanks |
