Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Welcome Song From: GUEST,Jim Dixon Date: 25 Oct 07 - 02:09 PM It's all because Google Book Search is a wonderful resource that wasn't available when this request was made. Now, when I'm bored, I look for old requests that weren't completely answered before. The best thing is to find songs that were published as poems and are now out of copyright. |

Subject: Lyr Add: THE WELCOME (Thomas Osborne Davis) From: Jim Dixon Date: 25 Oct 07 - 08:34 AM The oldest copy I could find is in 'The Spirit of the Nation: Ballads and Songs by the Writers of "The Nation"', Dublin: James Duffy, 1845. THE WELCOME. BY THOMAS DAVIS. COME in the evening, or come in the morning, Come when you're looked for, or come without warning, Kisses and welcome you'll find here before you, And the oftener you come here the more I'll adore you. Light is my heart since the day we were plighted, Red is my cheek that they told me was blighted; The green of the trees looks far greener than ever, And the linnets are singing, "true lovers! don't sever." I'll pull you sweet flowers, to wear if you choose them; Or, after you've kissed them, they'll lie on my bosom. I'll fetch from the mountain its breeze to inspire you; I'll fetch from my fancy a tale that won't tire you. Oh! your step's like the rain to the summer-vex'd farmer, Or sabre and shield to a knight without armour; I'll sing you sweet songs till the stars rise above me, Then, wandering, I'll wish you, in silence, to love me. We'll look through the trees at the cliff, and the eyrie, We'll tread round the rath on the track of the fairy, We'll look on the stars, and we'll list to the river, Till you ask of your darling what gift you can give her. Oh! she'll whisper you, "Love as unchangeably beaming, And trust, when in secret, most tunefully streaming, Till the starlight of heaven above us shall quiver, As our souls flow in one down eternity's river." So come in the evening, or come in the morning, Come when you're looked for, or come without warning, Kisses and welcome you'll find here before you, And the oftener you come here the more I'll adore you! Light is my heart since the day we were plighted, Red is my cheek that they told me was blighted; The green of the trees looks far greener than ever, And the linnets are singing, "true lovers! don't sever!" |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Welcome Song From: Jim Dixon Date: 08 Jul 02 - 02:21 PM Charley: Before you spend a lot of time (and perhaps money) on this, please note that the original request is over a year old, and the requester may not be paying attention any more. Work on this only if you enjoy the hunt for its own sake (as I do). |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Welcome Song From: Charley Noble Date: 06 Jul 02 - 10:41 AM Jim Dixon- You are a wonder for successfully sleuthing this one! Now if we can find a complete set of verses, we may learn why they were "forgettable.";~) Cheerily, Charley Noble, formerly known as Roll&Go-C |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Welcome Song From: Jim Dixon Date: 06 Jul 02 - 01:58 AM It's from a poem called "The Welcome" by Thomas Osborne Davis (1813–1845). An online version of Bartlett's "Familiar Quotations" quotes these lines: Come in the evening, or come in the morning; Come when you're looked for, or come without warning.... The starlight of heaven above us shall quiver As our souls flow in one down eternity's river. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Welcome Song From: GUEST,Roll&Go-C Date: 02 Mar 01 - 08:54 AM Sorcha, that would make sense. Could you provide some of the variations, if any of the verse? Sandy or Art ought to have a comment on this request. Bill and Gene had a lovely tune but I'm not experienced enough to provide that here; maybe I can persuade one of the more musically literate members of Roll&Go to do that. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Welcome Song From: Sorcha Date: 01 Mar 01 - 09:59 PM Found it on lots of pages, attributed to "Old Irish Saying". Didn't find any more than you have, tho. |

Subject: Lyr Add: THE WELCOME SONG From: GUEST,Roll&Go-C Date: 01 Mar 01 - 05:18 PM Our neighbors in Maine, Bill and Gene Bonyun used to always sing this song at their music parties and at weddings for their younger friends. They got the song from my mother who learned it from one her old folk song singing friends Wendy Holt who also used to do song parties. While all of us agree on the chorus, none of us are really sure of the verse and none of us has a clue where this song came from before we got hold of it. Bill is now at a rest/retirement home and really isn't capable of helping. Does anyone else have a clue? Here's what we remember of the song: THE WELCOME SONG (From the singing of Bill & Gene Bonyun who got the song from Dahlov Ipcar who learned it from Wendy Holt in the 1940's.) Chorus: Come in the evening and come in the morning, Come when you're looked for or come without warning; Kisses and welcome will be here before you, And the oftener you come, dear, the more I'll adore you. Oh, happy was the day when first that I met you, May your absence be long, I will n'er forget you; Mellow is my heart since you said that you love me, May the light from your eyes never fade from above me.
