It was recorded in Edinburgh Police Club where a song making fun of a Glasgow polis might have gone down quite well. Good Luck, Ian M.

I knew the Gabs back when they were part-time folkies.

Also, it occurred to me that I'm pretty sure that the Two -Heided Man was recorded live at a Police Social Club somewhere - I haven't looked at the album cover in a long while. So either McGinn was a very brave man, or else Glasagow polis have more sense of humour than I have usually ascribed to them... probably both...

I was in the Mitchell Library, Glasgow about an hour ago and they couldn't trace the song/poem despite having a fairly good McGinn archive. So why the difficulty?

Ah-ha! I thought it was the "Boar's Head". By the way John, as a former Glasgow polis--did you know Gaberlunzie--Robin Watson and Gordon Menzies?

Nick

If I remember correctly from my long gone Scotia Bar days, (which, as a former Glasgow polis, I only patronized off duty) the Boar's Head was nearby

Nick

Hi, It's "diggin' totties makin' tweed" and I think "snort" is more likely than "snout" as Scabby Doug says. The pub is a bit of a mystery. I am sure Matt sings "Bowers" which would rhyme with "hours" but I don't remember such a pub.

Good Luck,

Ian M.

Lend me 20 Capstan - until the shops are shut

i.e. he'd break into a shop when they were closed..

Also I think that snopt is probably "snort" - based on the rhyme with short...

Agree that Boars is incorrect- but can't remember what it should be - trying desperately to think of a bar that would have rhymed with "hours"

Hi Nick, From memory He says lend me 20 capsules, mate, until I show some stuff should be He says lend me 20 Capstan, mate until the shops are shut. Also snopt is probably snout. Toddys isn't correct and I'm not sure about Boars. I will check them tonight when I get home from work.

Good Luck,

Ian M.

The lyrics don't seem to be there, yet, but if you don't already have it bookmarked, keep an eye on Matt McGinn's Homepage

Parts of the site are stll under construction.

Subject: Lyr Add: THE BIG GLASGOW POLIS (Matt McGinn)
From: GUEST,Nick
Date: 03 Apr 01 - 09:36 AM

This is what I transcribe and I know there are mistakes. Can anyone help me fix them? Nick

THE BIG GLASGOW POLIS
(Matt McGinn)

With my handcuffs and my truncheon, my whistle and my book
I'm the scourge of all the criminals, the terror o' the crook
Upon my feet you'll always find a pair of size eighteen
I'm the finest Glasgow polisman that you have ever seen

I was workin' in the Heilands with the toddy's? makin' tweed
Say whiskey and some potcheen (sp), to put jam upon my breid
My cousin, Donald he says to me, "Come on, we're wastin' time.
We'll join the Glasgow polis force and put an end to crime."

One night when I was on my beat quite lonely by mysel'
I met a Glasgow lady; she was on her beat as well.
He asked me for the time. I obliged her with a snopt, [I have no idea-that's what it sounds like.]
Although I must confess, the time she asked was very short.

Now the Glasgow polis force it is acutely short of staff.
If I tell to you the reason, it'll maybe make some of you laugh.
Last night for breakin' into to shops up in the Gallowgate,
They arrested seven criminals and one of them was my mate.

They've given me another mate. He's one of the finest men,
And he and me went out today upon the 2 to 10.
We'd scarcely left the station, when threw away his butt.
He says lend me 20 capsules, mate, until I show some stuff...[I can't make this line out at all]

Now if ever you're in trouble and you dial 999,
And the operator tells you, "You should try another line,"
The line to try is some of the pubs, the Scotia and the Boar's.
That's where you're sure to find me, lads, especially after hours.

With my handcuffs and my truncheon, my whistle and my book,
I'm the scourge of all the criminals, the terror o' the crook.
Upon my feet you'll always find a pair of size eighteen.
I'm the finest Glasgow polisman that you have ever seen.
