Rana doesn't pick a note (or at least I haven't seen it) but he is one of the treasures of alternative acoustic music in Toronto. He is greatly appreciated...and an extremely nice, bright and funny guy.

I would like to flame Rana for doing a great job at the Flying Cloud. Just wish it wasn't a Sunday night, can't face the 1 1/4 houris drive home and the 6.oo get up the following morning. JohnB

The TRANZAC has a variety of things -

Flying Cloud Folk Club (which I'm involved with) are on Sundays September after labour Day to the end of May (Easter, Xmas/New Year, sometimes Thanksgiving excepted) These are concerts and not jams.

Comhaltas have sessions twice a month - 2nd and 4th Wednesdays, except summer.

There have been open stages and a Saturday series organised by Norm Hacking weekly.

Wednesday's have had music, weekly in the style of Django Reinhardt (might have spelled that wrong - sorry) and I believe they have had an open jam on Monday's.

Note: the TRANZAC has a Main Hall (Cloud), the "Tiki Room" (sessions), and the Southern Cross.

As for 'grass, which was the direct question, I have to say not really. Phone number there is 416 923 8137. And before I'm flamed for advertising, I have no finacial stake there - people doing the above, (mostly) do it for the love of the music and volunteer - as do other places such as Acoustic Harvest. A large problem in Toronto is getting the word out - once your in the know it is easy to find out, however, getting the word out - apart from community radio is an excercise in persistance. By the way I might as well plug ASteve Pritchard's Old Time/blue grass show - radio boogie on CKLN (10 pm Wednesday's) which compliments other shows on CKLN and of course CIUT as you all know.

Hugh's Room is at Dundas West south of Bloor (near the Dundas subway station.
I am not sure if they are planning to hold jam sessions.

The Acoustic Harvest Folk Club is located at the Birch Cliff United Church, corner of Kingston Rd & Warden Ave. phone number 416-264-2235
I am not familiar with any jam sessions held there on a regular basis either.

The Oasis does have an old-time session on the first Sunday of each month at 8:00 pm.

Greenbank Folk Music Society has a jam session on the first Sunday of each month held at 2:00 - 5:00pm.

I do not know of any regular jam sessions at the Tranzac.

Thanks folks. I have checked out a few of these places and for some reason I didn't think that folk music was a regular occurance at some. I have checked out the Silver Dollar for the grass and is quite good and have been to the Free Times and the Country Music Store (saturday afternoons are kinda bad for me)once or twice but should go back. Does the Tranzac host a jam? I've seen a couple of good shows there but didn't think they hosted a jam. Where or what are Hugh's Room and Acoustic Harvest? Do they host a jam? And what about the Free Times, is it always an open mic sort of format or is there a jam night?

Lots of folk in Toronto. Rick Fielding is a denizen of this site. His radio program, Acoustic Workshop, Mondays 7-8 on CIUTFM covers the Toronto folk waterfront. Three places devoted to folkies and other acoustic music: The Free Times and the Oasis, on College Street by Spadina; and the Tranzac, Bloor and Brunswick. Others around, lots of shows, place is a hive of activity.

Acoustic Harvest. 'bout 20 folk concerts a year.

Tranzac Club. 'bout 30 folk concerts a year.

About twenty Pubs with Irish sessions goin' regularly

Country Music Store. Bluegrass Jams every Saturday for the last 20 years.

Hugh's Room. Upcoming: Jesse Winchester, then Tom Paxton.

St Paul's Trinity. 'bout 10 folk concerts a year.

Three song circle groups who've been meeting every Friday for many years.

Silver Dollar Hotel. Bluegrass music every Wednesday night for years.

That's a few of 'em.

Any of you pickers livin' in Toronto? Where are the grass jams? Or places that feature acoustic music of other varieties? It seems a decidedly un-folky town but perhaps I need to look harder.
