You should be able to use your Mudcat name as your Logon ID, and whatever password you so choose. You download the software, register and logon, and go into my device manager or device configuration and determine how much hard drive space you want to allocate. You do this while you're actually on the internet and connected to the site.

If you have a large hardrive (20 or more gigs), figure on devoting 1 gigabyte of hardrive space towards it. Don't just run it as a screen saver, but rather let it run (when it detects snooze mode, after 5 minutes.) There should be more help stuff on the site. Hope this was of some help.

Same questions, still no answers. I'll be all right, with a little hand holding. So..after I use the blue clicky thing and click that I want to join, can I just put in my Mudcat name, or do I have to register somewhere else with my real name? Or do I just keep trying whenever the infernal machine says there's been an error? I'm willing to keep re-entering, as long as I know I'm not pounding sand down a rat hole.

I just tried joining, and I had the same problem Sorcha did at first, except that I didn't see a download button. Can I use my Mudcat name and password, or do I have to register somewhere else, or what? I have to get to work now, so I'll follow instructions when I get home tonight and give it another try. (Remember, I still live just up the road from the Amish. Really.)

I am still using the screen saver and it has not caused any problems for me, other than the "jiggling" driving me nuts when I'm in the room but not on the computer.

Amos, I may be wrong on this but a feeling I got which didn't encourage me to keep trying was that there was an Intel/ PC/ Windows focus there.

Well -- I dunno if these guys are all that smart -- they asked me to select my OS and gave me a bunch of low-end second rate options from Microsoft!! The SETi crowd were up for any OS you had to run it on, at least.

If their research protocols are as narrow-minded as their interface design, I reckon they may still be solving last year's issues!

I packed in. It kept loosing my results near the end of a processing run i.e. in the 98+% range or maybe it was the final send. I know I wasn't alone with this problem - there were other comments in the message board system but no solution offered.

Good point Mark but whether this one find a cure/cause or not, the idea of donating a little spare processing power is interesting and my be proven to have many useful applications.

well said, Doctor Mark; I could not agree more.

Once cancer sets in it is often as a result of years of living life "out of balance" and by that time only drastic allopathic methods have a chance of working. Holistic measures can do a lot if applied early enough.

Stress reduction and proper nutrition would do a lot to reduce cancer rates in this country I bet; not to mention a less toxic environment but I for one feel helpless against that at times...

The jiggling is probably because, unlike the SETI@home site, this one is actually a screensaver. For those who remember the dark ages of computing, if you left your computer on after logging off, the flashing cursor and steady C:\> (or A\:> for the real oldtimers) would eventually burn out the phosphor on your monitor screen. So somebody invented the screensaver, a little program that kept images moving on the screen when the computer was not in use. Hence, the jiggles. I imagine there might be a way to turn it off.

Just a side note to say that while I like this idea and think it may be helpful, when you think about cancer it's important to look at the big picture: causation (smoking, pollution, nasty chemicals in our agrocorporate food supply, commercial-driven nutritionally wretched foods in our diets and especially our kids' diets, etc.), better access to health care, and a broad-based approached to prevention and treatment rather than the "let's find the magic molecule which will get rid of all cancers so we can all keep trashing our bodies and our environment and not worry, tra-la" approach. All of which is not to belittle the amazing success modern medicine has had in prolonging and improving the lives of those who have cancer--just trying to provide some perspective. OK, soapbox off.

Aloha,
Mark

There are nine of us now. Does everbody elses' go all jiggly? Mine does, and I can't stand it, so I decrease the contrast on the monitor to zero so that the screen is black but it is still running.

Max, I'm already running this and have been for some time, are there benefits to the service in a team approach?Enough to make it worth my uninstalling and joining again as part of the team?

I'll give it a go next week when the visitors have gone and I've got access to my own PC. The one I'm using this week does not meet the 48Mb RAM minimum spec.

Hi all. Just wanted to let you know about some software that I am running to help find a cure for cancer. It runs as a screensaver and/or in the background as you use your computer. I have it running on 6 machines here at Mudcat HQ. You can run it too. I have created a team which you can join here. You can download the software and run it too, and as a group we can do our little part to help. The Web site has plenty of info on the project and keeps a tally of all our CPU time and results. I check it every morning. Just thought it might be something we can do with our computers in addition to checking the Mudcat 18 times a day. Spread the word at work and have them join our team. The link to our team and to get signed up which is the same as the link above is: http://members.ud.com/services/teams/team.htm?id=FF522EE4-424A-47EF-81C5-EC4366B8E354. Send it to friends and such. The project is getting popular, so the Web site is slow and has errors sometimes, but keep trying. Thanks.
